Vermont Mountaineers News Release

MONTPELIER, VT - A balanced offensive attack Saturday night in Montpelier helped Vermont take their second game in a row, 9-5.

Big offensive nights for Paul Witt (Harper's Ferry, WV/ VCU), Brett Malm (Medford, NY/ Adelphi), and Nate Grys (Sterling Heights, MI/ Western Michigan) fueled a nine run, 12 hit attack for Vermont. Witt was 3-4 with a homerun, a triple and an RBI, Malm was 3-4 with a double, and Grys was 2-4 with a triple, a double and 2 RBI'S.

After Upper Valley jumped out to a 3-0 lead through two and half innings, Vermont answered back for four in the bottom of the third. Six singles, including RBI singles from Bryce Kelley (Rockford, MI/ Michigan State), Grys, and Ronald Medina (Bronx, NY/ Keystone) helped Vermont take the 4-3 lead.

Witt's solo homerun in the fourth, his first of the year, added another run to Vermont's lead, 5-3. Upper Valley would tie the game in the fifth, chasing Vermont starter John Cain (Middleboro, NY/ Manhattan) from the game. He lasted four and a third innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits while walking two and striking out nine. Levi Abrahamson (Mountain Home, ID/ Missouri Western) picked up the win in relief, throwing two and two thirds scoreless innings, only allowing two baserunners while striking out three.

Vermont took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Malm came around to score when Medina reached on an error by the third baseman. Medina took third on the play, and scored on a single from Austin Masel (Stoneham, MA/ Holy Cross), giving Vermont the 7-5 lead.

The dagger came in the bottom of the seventh. Malm doubled with one out, and came around to score when Grys put a ball into the right center gap. The throw to third went into the NightHawks dugout, allowing Grys to score the ninth run. The Mountaineers would take the game, 9-5.

Vermont (8-16) lengthens their longest win streak of the year to two, and look to carry momentum into tomorrow's game against first place Valley (17-5). They sit 10 games back of Valley, who had an off day Saturday. The game will be held at Recreation Field, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30. It can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 or online, via the NECBL Broadcast Network.
