Nighthawks Fall to Mountaineers

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Upper Valley Nighthawks fell to 2-1 in this season's Governor's Cup series (a six-game showdown), as they suffered a 9-5 loss to the Vermont Mountaineers on Saturday night in Montpelier.
The Nighthawks were first to get in the scoreboard, plating a run in the top of the 1st inning on a Ross Cadena (Wichita State University) single.
Riley Smith (University of Minnesota) led off the 3rd inning with a single before Anthony Quirion (Lamar University) drove him in on a base-hit to left field. Quirion would later come around to score on an Austin Wilhite (Georgia Tech) RBI knock, extending Upper Valley's lead to three runs.
The Mountaineers struck back in the home-half of the third frame however, as they managed to bring across four runs on six hits to attack Upper Valley, leaving the visitors trailing by one run after three innings.
Vermont's Paul Witt led off the following inning with a homerun to extend the Mountaineers' lead to 5-3.
Refusing to back down, the Nighthawks put up two more runs in the fifth inning to tie the ballgame. Bryant Bowen (University of Southern Mississippi) ripped a 2-RBI single into right field, scoring Quirion and Wilhite on the play.
A costly Nighthawks error allowed Vermont to erase all progress and tack two more runs onto their tally in the bottom of the 5th. The Mountaineers added on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh to secure the 9-5 win over Upper Valley.
Nighthawks starter Jordy Allard (Southern NH University) pitched three innings, gave up four runs on six hits, and striking out four. Reliever Ryan Parker (University of West Georgia) threw two innings, surrendering three runs on three hits, and fanning one Mountaineer. Stephen Hansen (Iona College) followed with two innings out of the bullpen, before Jack Ipsen (Bryant University) finished out the night for Upper Valley.
The Nighthawks return home tomorrow, and will be traveling back in time to the 1980s. 80s Night will feature a post game concert from the Tricksters, a Guinness World Record attempt for the most popped collars, and all the greatness that was the 1980s. If you can't make it to the ballpark, Dan Stein and Quinn Kelly will have all of the action covered on the NECBL Broadcast Network starting at 6:20 P.M.
