Vermont Mountaineers News Release

SANFORD, ME - The Vermont Mountaineers secured their fifth win of the season at Goodall Park against the Sanford Mainers during a New England Collegiate Baseball League double header. After a 2-0 win in the opening contest, the Mountaineers took down the hosts to complete the sweep with a 4-2 extra inning win.

In the opener, back-to-back three-up, -down innings gave the fans a scoreless game to watch, until Vermont's Gerry Siracusa (UMass Lowell) blasted a double to lead off the top of the fourth. Matthew Venuto (Fairfield / Mansfield, Mass.) and Jack Cone (William & Mary / Fairfax, Va.) sacrificed their at-bats to the Mainer's right fielder to give Siracusa the lead to make it home.

Joan Sosa (Fairleigh Dickinson / Bronx, N.Y.)) was hit by a pitch and answered with a stolen base before scoring on a Josh Cameron (Southeast Missouri State / Pflugerville, Texas) reaching home prior to Sanford's double play which ended the fourth inning.

The Mainer's top hitter Quinn McDaniel recorded one of the two Sanford hits and struggled to capitalize on the Mountaineer's pitching.

Mountaineer's starting pitcher, Maxwell Parker (Le Moyne College / Manlius, N.Y.) threw a complete game and gave up two hits while adding five strikeouts and one walk. Bryce Afthim suffered the loss for the home team, allowing both runs on five hits in four innings of work.

Vermont took the second game in extra innings after fending off a rally by the Mainers late. The home team took an early lead in the contest before the Mountaineers evened the score in the sixth.

Evan Fox (Stony Brook / ) reached on a one-out walk, before advancing to third on a two-out single by Siracusa. Fox came around to score on a single by Ben Williamson (William & Mary / Midlothian, Va.) to knot the game at one.

The game went into extra's after a scoreless seventh and Vermont struck first. Stephen DiTomaso (George Washington / Haddonfield, N.J.) scored after Fox reached on an error by the pitcher to make it 2-1 but the Mainers evened the score in the home half.

However, Vermont took advantage of some small ball in the top of the ninth inning. With no outs Chrisian Pregent (Stetson / Dayton Beach, Fla.) bunted down the line with all runners reaching safely and Williamson and Siracusa scoring on the play after some help from the defense, taking a 4-2 lead. The Mainers wouldn't go quietly in the bottom half, loading the bases with two outs. However, Jack Metzger (Dartmouth / Powell, OH) struckout the final batter to complete the sweep.

Vermont returns home to take on the Keene Swampbats at 6:30 PM at Montpelier Recreation Field on Sunday, June 12. The game is sponsored by Mekkelsen RV.
