Vermont Mountaineers News Release
North Adams, MA - The Vermont Mountaineers stole eight bases, setting a new franchise single season record with 92, in a 6-2 victory against the North Adams SteepleCats in New England Collegiate Baseball League action on Friday night.
The eight stolen bags marked the fourth time this year the Mountaineers have stolen at least seven in a game this year breaking a record that stood since the inaugural season in 2003. The team is now 18 away from tying the league record of 110 set by Central Mass in 1997.
The SteepleCats took an early lead on a wild pitch from starter Fred Shepard in the bottom of the first. Shepard (Amherst, MA/Amherst) would settle down after giving up just two runs, one earned, on five hits.
Brett Johnson would bring the score even again hitting a solo homerun in the top of the second. Johnson (Little Elm, TX/TCU) tied for the team high in homers with three. The Mountaineers would add two more in the fourth run Rob Kelly and Johnson hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning before Doug Freeman walked to load the bases with two outs. Then John Hotta (Oceanside, CA/San Diego) hit looping single into left-centerfield that drove in two as Freeman was thrown out rounding third. Vermont would take a 3-1 lead after the inning.
North Adams would cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth when Chantz Mack hit a two out double before scoring on consecutive singles from Mike LeBel and Drew Gadaire. They would threaten again in the sixth with a runner on second and one out. Jerome Werniuk (Toronto, Canada/LeMoyne) would relieve Shepard and strike out two straight batters to end the inning.
The Mountaineers would add another in the seventh and two in the eighth to take a 6-2 lead. Spencer Jackson and Jacob Booden would combine to throw three scoreless innings to ensure their fourth straight victory and ninth in their last eleven.
Shepard (3-0) threw five and two third innings striking out three and walking three in the victory. SteepleCats starter Frank Morris (0-4) gave up three runs on seven five hits walking five and striking out four in the loss.
Vermont (20-13) will be back in action tomorrow as they travel to Holyoke, Mass. to take on the Blue Sox at 6:30 p.m. at MacKenzie Field. You can hear all the action live on ESPN 1240, WSKI and online at www.thevermontmountaineers.com.
