Montpelier, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Laconia Muskrats 9-3 in game one of the Northern Division semifinals in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) playoffs. With the win, the Mountaineers take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.

Trailing 3-2 in the seventh inning, the Mountaineers offense exploded for seven runs to take a commanding 9-3 lead. Jack Parenty (Stony Brook) led off with a walk. Casey Rodrigue (Indiana) followed with a double to set up second and third with no outs. Parenty scored on a passed ball to knot the game at three. Rodrigue moved to third on the play. Chandler Brock (Alabama-Huntsville) came on to pinch hit and drew a walk. Colin Lyman (Louisville) followed with a huge clutch hit, a two-run double, to plate Rodrigue and Brock and put Vermont up 5-3. Lyman advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on an RBI single by collegiate teammate Nick Solak (Louisville). Solak then stole second, and two batters later, Mike Vigliarolo (St. Louis) struck out but advanced on an error by Muskrats catcher Jake Henson (St. Louis). Solak sprinted around third and swiped home on the play, narrowly sliding under the tag of Laconia reliever Mariano Rivera (Iona). Vigliarolo advanced to second on the play. Ian Sagdal (Washington State) followed with a walk to set the scene at first and second with one out. Trey Amburgey (St. Petersburg) capped off the inning by drilling a two-run double, scoring Vigliarolo and Sagdal to make it a 9-3 game.

Laconia scored three runs in the opening inning off Vermont starter Ryan Davis (Le Moyne), but he was very strong the rest of the way. The southpaw allowed the three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks over six and two-thirds innings of work. Davis struck out six.

Sam Spencer (Castleton) dealt the final two and one-third innings. He gave up no runs on no hits and no walks. He struck out one and moved to 1-0 this postseason.
