August 4, 2014 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) News Release
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - With plenty still up for grabs in all facets of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) landscape over the final week of the 2014 regular season, two individuals made sure their performances stood above the rest, as Vermont outfielder Colin Lyman (Louisville) and Newport right-handed pitcher Brett Hanewich (Stanford) were named Week 9 Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
The dynamic duo played key roles in leading their squads to hot finishes down the stretch; Lyman guided Vermont to the North Division title and a final record of 27-15 after posting a 4-2 record over the last six games, earning the Mountaineers the No. 1 seed in the North Division Semifinals. Hanewich and Newport, meanwhile, charged over the finish line thanks to a league-best seven wins over eight games last week, roaring from fourth place into second in the South Division with a final record of 25-17.
At the dish, Lyman certainly made his case for the league's top performer last week. The Louisville rising sophomore torched the opposition by finishing 12-for-17 at the plate with a league-best .706 batting average. His versatility helped the Mountaineers win four more games as he contributed four runs, two doubles, one home run and four RBI while, most impressively finishing with six stolen bases in seven attempts, a mark that was second most in the league during that stretch.
The left-handed outfielder finished the regular season with a .379 batting average in 23 games, posting a 22-for-58 clip at the plate with 14 runs, three doubles, a triple, homer and s
even RBI while totaling an impressive .930 OPS and .379/.413/.517 slash line.
Hanewich made sure his last regular season start was his most best, logging a seven-inning shutout against New Bedford on July 30 while striking out 10, walking one and surrendering just two hits. Those numbers produced a WHIP of 0.43, one of the top marks among starters last week, as his outing paced the Gulls to an 8-0 blowout win. On the year, the rising sophomore at Stanford has struck out 32 in just over 32 innings while walking only 12, and could figure into the Newport postseason rotation.
