
Mountaineers Nipped by North Adams

North Adams, Massachusetts - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped a 7-6 game to the North Adams SteepleCats in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Joe Wolfe Field on Thursday night. With the loss, Vermont trails the first place Sanford Mainers by a game and a half in the Northern Division.
The SteepleCats broke the 6-6 tie in the bottom of the eighth. Anthony Papio (Maryland) crushed a one out double to right center. After the double, Todd Juliano (Flagler) walked. On the play, Papio danced off second, prompting Vermont catcher Josh Treff (Northeastern) to thrown down to second. Papio took off for third on the throw and slid in safely. Papio scored the go ahead run on a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Josh Delph (Florida State). North Adams closed the game out in the top of the ninth, securing the one-run win.
Each team plated three runs in the third inning. The Mountaineers took a 3-0 lead in the top of the frame. Ian Sagdal (Washington State) singled to lead off the inning. Casey Rodrigue (Indiana) followed with a walk to set the scene at first and second with no outs. After Evan Harasta (Albany) laid down a sacrifice bunt, to move the runners up to second and third. Colin Lyman (Louisville) knocked an RBI single to give Vermont a 1-0 edge. Jack Parenty (Stony Brook) grounded out to second to score Rodrigue and put Vermont on top 2-0. Trey Amburgey (St. Petersburg) followed with an RBI infield single to score Lyman and open up a 3-0 lead.
Zach Lucas (Louisville) had the big hit in the bottom of the third, a two RBI single to make it 3-2 Vermont. J.C. Cardenas (Barry) followed with an RBI single to score Lucas and knot the game at three.
North Adams also scored a run in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth.
Vermont scored two runs in the sixth. Blake Tiberi (Louisville) hit a one out single. Two batters later, Rob Knightes (St. John's) walked before Sagdal hit an RBI single to score Tiberi. Knightes also scored on the play, when centerfielder Kyle Richardson (Notre Dame) overthrew third base.
Vermont tied the game in the seventh when Colin Lyman (Louisville) led off with an infield single. Lyman flew around third to score the tying run from second base on a wild pitch.
Cameron Sorgie (Albany) started for the Mountaineers and received no decision. Sorgie allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out two.
Shaefer Shepard (Catawba) started for the SteepleCats and lasted six innings. He gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks. He struck out five.
Zach Prendergast (Seton Hall) got the win to improve to 1-0 on the summer. He gave up one earned run on three hits. He struck out two.
Dalton Goss (Alabama-Huntsville) took the loss to move to 0-1 on the season. Goss surrendered one earned run on one hit and one walk in three innings of work. He struck out two.
Sagdal had a big game for the Mountaineers, going 4-4 with four singles. Tiberi and Lyman had two hits apiece.
The Mountaineers return to action on Friday night, when they host the Valley Blue Sox for an NECBL meeting at Recreation Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com. The World sponsors Senator Bill Doyle night at the ballpark. 2013 Mountaineers baseball card sets will be handed out to the first 100 kids in attendance.
