Keene Swamp Bats News Release
KEENE, N.H. - The Keene Swamp Bats dropped their second straight game tonight at the hands of the Plymouth Pilgrims 9-3 at Alumni Field.
The Pilgrims avenged their 7-0 defeat at the hands of the Swamp Bats earlier in the year on July 2 in Plymouth.
With the loss, the Swamp Bats drop back below .500 at 11-12 on the year. The Pilgrims improve their South Division leading record to 19-6 on the year.
The Swamp Bats got the scoring going in the first inning when Dominic Severino (Central Connecticut State) lead off the second inning with a home run to straight away centerfield to give Keene the early 1-0 lead.
The Pilgrims came right back however in the top of the third inning scoring five times in the frame. Plymouth took the lead when James Bunn (Virginia Commonwealth) singled to right. The throw to the plate from Zach Lauricella (St. John's) took a bad hop getting by Connor Fitzsimons (Central Connecticut State) allowed both Daniel Swain (Siena) and John Adams (Boston College) to score, giving the Pilgrims the 2-1 lead. Bunn advanced to third on the two base error.
After an RBI single by Tom Roulis (Dartmouth), Vincent Guglietti (Quinnipiac) hit a two-run home run to right field to finish the scoring for the Pilgrims in the frame making it 5-1. All of the runs were earned.
That was it for Swamp Bats starter Matt Blandino (Central Connecticut State) who lasted just three innings giving up five runs on six hits, no walks and one strikeout on 43 pitches. He was charged with the loss and falls to 1-2.
Sam Triece (Washington State) came into relief in the fourth inning but did not fare much better. Triece gave up a total of three runs (two earned) in 1.1 innings of work. He gave up a pair of runs in the fourth inning on a RBI single by Roulis scoring Swain and Adams on the play to make it 7-1 Pilgrims.
Things didn't get much better for the Swamp Bats in the fifth inning as back-to-back home runs by Matt Walsh (Franklin Pierce) and Brent Rooker (Mississippi State) made it 9-1.
Pilgrims starter Danny Garcia (Miami) pitched a brilliant game featuring a baffling curveball. He pitched six solid innings giving up just one run on the Severino home run on six hits, walked three and struck out nine on 93 pitches. He ended his night with a 3-2 strikeout of Taylor Perez (St. Leo) with the bases loaded in the sixth inning. Garcia was credited with the win and improves to 2-0 on the year.
The Swamp Bats would load the bases again in the eighth inning but could only come away with scoring just two runs in the frame.
The Swamp Bats will take on North Division leading Sanford Mainers tomorrow night at Goodall Park in Sanford. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30.
Last night's home game that was rained out against the Newport Gulls has been rescheduled for Tuesday, July 15 at Alumni Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 pm.
