
Mountaineers Level Record with Victory over Keene

Montpelier, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers took down Northern Division rivals, the Keene Swamp Bats, 5-2 in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Recreation Field on Tuesday night. With the win, the Mountaineers get back to .500 at 4-4 on the summer.
The Mountaineers achieved a new season high, scattering nine hits, and the Vermont pitching thrived once again.
Mountaineers starter Evan Bell (Indiana) went six innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and one walk. He struck out seven and got the win to improve to 1-0. Ty Wiest (Columbia) earned a three-inning save in relief. Wiest gave up no runs on one hit and two walks. He struck out two.
Vermont wasted no time getting on the board, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Alex Caruso (St. John's) led off the game with a walk. Jack Parenty (Stony Brook) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Caruso to second. Chandler Brock (Alabama-Huntsville) hit an RBI single to left to score Caruso and give the Mountaineers the early lead.
Vermont added a run in the second. Blake Tiberi (Louisville) hit a one out double and advanced to third on a passed ball during Rob Knightes' (St. John's) at bat. Knightes hit an RBI single to score Tiberi from third.
The Mountaineers held the 2-0 lead until the fifth when Keene tied the game with two runs on four hits. Dominic Severino (Central Connecticut State) and former Mountaineer Bret Dennis (St. John's) had the RBIs.
Vermont had its biggest inning in the fifth, when Tiberi, Knightes and Ben Hall (Alabama-Huntsville) singled consecutively. Hall's hit scored Tiberi from second to give the Mountaineers a 3-2 edge. After Evan Harasta (Albany) laid down a sacrifice bunt, Caruso singled to score Knightes from third and make it 4-2.
The Mountaineers added their final run of the game in the sixth. Brock walked and moved to second when Ian Sagdal (Washington State) grounded out to short. Brock scored from second when Mike Krische (Canisius) grounded out softly to Keene second baseman, Dennis. Brock motored around third and slid home safely, beating the throw with relative ease.
Caruso, Brock, Tiberi and Knightes led the Mountaineers with two hits apiece.
David Sosebee (Georgia) took the loss for the Swamp Bats, pitching five and two-thirds innings. He allowed five earned runs on nine hits and two walks. He struck out two.
The Mountaineers return to action Wednesday night when they battle the Laconia Muskrats in NECBL play. The game is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start at Robbie Mills Field in Laconia, New Hampshire. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
