Keene Swamp Bats News Release
The Keene Swamp Bats came up on the wrong end of a 5-2 decision against the Vermont Mountaineers tonight. It is the sixth straight loss for the defending NECBL Champions.
Keene drops to 1-7 on the season, while Vermont improves to 4-4.
After the Swamp Bats tied things up at two apiece with two runs in the top half of the fifth, the Mountaineers stormed right back with a pair of their own in the home half of the inning and added one more run in the bottom of the sixth to account for the final score. Ben Hall (Alabama-Huntsville) and Alex Caruso (St. John's) each brought home runs with RBI singles in the inning. Chandler Brock (Alabama-Huntsville) plated the final run of the night for Vermont with some heads-up baserunning, breaking for third on the pitch and coming around to score as Mike Krische (Canisius) grounded out to Swamp Bat second baseman Brett Dennis (St. John's).
David Sosebee (Georgia) worked the first 5.2 innings for Keene, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits, walking two and striking out two. He was dealt the loss and drops to 0-1 on the season.
Evan Bell (Indiana) earned the win for Vermont, going the first six innings and giving up two runs on seven hits and fanning seven. Bell improves to 1-0 on the season and Ty Weist (Columbia) closed out the final three frames to pick up his first save.
The Mountaineers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with solo runs in the first and second on RBI singles from Brock and Robbie Knightes (St. John's).
Stymied by Bell through the first four innings, the Swamp Bats would break through in the fifth as Conner Simonetti (Kent State) singled to lead off, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a Ryan Summers (Louisville) single and was driven in by Dennis' RBI single. Later in the inning, Summers would score to tie the game on an RBI single by Dominic Severino (Central Conn State).
Dennis led the way offensively for Keene, going 2-4 with a double and an RBI. Six other players had one hit apiece to come to a game total of eight hits for the Swamp Bats.
Matthew Crohan (Winthrop) and Ben Criscuolo (Southern NH) each recorded scoreless outings out of the bullpen for Keene.
The Swamp Bats will try to snap their six-game losing streak tomorrow night when the New Bedford Bay Sox come to town for a 6:30 first pitch.
Michael Dunnigan (St. Leo) will be on the mound for Keene.
