Mountaineer Greenwood Debuts for St. Louis
June 17, 2014 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) News Release
Southpaw Nick Greenwood made his Major League debut for the St. Louis Cardinals last night. A native of Southington, Conn., Greenwood spent his summer with the 2008 Vermont Mountaineers.
Greenwood got the win in his debut against the New York Mets. He threw 3.1 strong innings in relief, allowing just one earned run while fanning three.
In eight starts and four relief appearances for the 2008 Vermont Mountaineers, Greenwood went 3-3 with a 3.09 ERA and a complete game. He struck out 44 and walked just nine in 43.2 innings.
Greenwood becomes the 42nd NECBL graduate to play in the Major Leagues this season, and the 103rd overall. He is the fourth NECBL product to make his Big League debut in 2014.
A University of Rhode Island product, Greenwood had a 2.61 ERA and nearly a 5:1 strikeout-walk ratio in 22 games for St. Louis' Triple-A Memphis affiliate. He was originally drafted by the San Diego Padres in 2009, and was named a Northwest League All-Star that same year. A converted starter, Greenwood spent parts of four seasons in Memphis before getting the call to the Show.
The NECBL congratulates Nick on this exceptional achievement.
