Vermont Mountaineers News Release

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped a New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) game to the North Adams SteepleCats, 7-3, at Recreation Field on Monday night. The contest marked the final one of a three-game home stand for the Mountaineers.

Vermont drops to 8-9 with the loss, while North Adams improves to 11-8.

The Mountaineers pitching staff allowed seven runs, only one of which was earned, as three fielding errors decimated Vermont.

With the score 3-1 North Adams entering the top of the ninth inning, reliever Adam Seibert, (West Chester, Pa. / Hofstra) got the first batter he faced to pop out, marking the seventh consecutive batter he retired. SteepleCats' third baseman Joe Burns (Shelton, Conn. / Quinnipiac) reached on an error to begin the four-run North Adams ninth. Burns reached second on the play. Rightfielder Parker Perez (Winter Springs, Fla. / Jacksonville) connected on an RBI single to make it 4-1. After centerfielder Graham McIntire (Concord, N.H. / Marist) reached on an infield single to move Perez to second, second baseman Hunter Lee (Maitland, Fla. / High Point) singled. Perez moved to third on the play and Lee to second, as McIntire was tagged out by Vermont second baseman Thomas Roulis (New Hyde Park, N.Y. / Dartmouth) 6-5-2-4. North Adams rightfielder Michael Babb (Jacksonville, Fla. / Jacksonville) walked to load the bases with two outs before first baseman Victor Sorrento (Monroe Township, N.J. / Sacred Heart) ripped a two out, two RBI double to make it 6-1. Babb came in to score on a passed ball to cap off the inning and make it 7-1.

Vermont scored one run in the sixth courtesy of an RBI single by leftfielder Nick Ruppert (La Mesa, Calif. / Dartmouth). Catcher Danny Bermudez (Cummings, Ga. / Western Carolina) blasted a two-run homerun in the ninth to make it a 7-3 game, ending his two-for-four night with a bang.

North Adams scored two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 3-0 lead in the middle innings.

Vermont starter Tim Knesnik (Milford, Pa. / Stony Brook) took the loss to fall to 1-2 despite pitching well. Knesnik allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk over six innings of work. He struck out one.

For the SteepleCats, starter Josh Garran (Old Tappan, N.J. / Pace) pitched very well. He lasted seven innings and allowed just one earned run on four hits and two walks. He struck out four en route to moving to a perfect 3-0 on the season.

The Mountaineers return to action on Tuesday night when they hit the road to square off with the Keene Swamp Bats for the first time this summer. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Alumni Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
