Ocean State Waves News Release

WAKEFIELD, R.I.-Three years into their existence in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, the Ocean State Waves have already sent several ballplayers down the path of success at both the collegiate and professional levels. This week, the Waves were pleased to learn that two former Waves received accolades for their performance on and off the diamond. 2013 Wave outfielder Mike Gerber was named a Midwest League All-Star, while 2014 Wave infielder Tim Caputo was voted the TD Ameritrade Fan's Choice Award recipient.

Gerber was selected as the starting left fielder for the Eastern Division squad in the 2015 Midwest League All-Star Game in Peoria, Illinois. Gerber, who currently plays for the Western Michigan WhiteCaps (Class-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers), went 2-5 as the Eastern Division won the exhibition, 5-0.

The All-Star selection continues an accolade-filled stretch for Gerber over the past three years. A 2013 NECBL All-Star with the Waves, Gerber was the first Wave drafted when he was selected in the fourteenth round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Detroit Tigers. Gerber was also named a New York-Pennsylvania League All-Star following his performance with the Connecticut Tigers last summer.

In his first full professional season, Gerber has been tearing it up with the WhiteCaps. Gerber has played 72 games for Western Michigan, hitting .323 with five home runs and 42 RBI. Gerber ranks in the top ten in the Midwest League in batting average, runs batted in, on-base percentage (.393), and slugging percentage (.466).

Caputo became the first Rhode Island Ram to be selected as the recipient of the TD Ameritrade Fan's Choice Award as part of the College Home Run Derby in Omaha, Nebraska. Caputo was one of eighteen players nominated, and was eventually chosen based on getting the most votes in an online contest. The Fan's Choice Award recognizes exemplary efforts on the diamond, in the classroom, and in the community.

Tim, a Kinesiology major at the University of Rhode Island, was named to the Dean's List six times while at URI while also being named to the Atlantic-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll. During his time with the Ocean State Waves in 2014, Tim logged hours at Olympic Physical Therapy, where he continued to work into his senior season at URI.

On the diamond, Caputo shined as the starting shortstop for the Rhode Island Rams. In 48 games, Caputo hit .269 with 14 RBI and 12 stolen bases. By winning the Fan's Choice Award, Caputo will participate in the 2015 College Home Run Derby at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska.
