Vermont Mountaineers News Release

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. - Thanks to another strong pitching performance and timely hitting over the latter stages of the game, the Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Ocean State Waves, 3-2, in an extra-inning New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) affair at Old Mountain Field on Thursday night.

Vermont earned its seventh consecutive victory to improve to 22-13 on the summer. The Waves dropped to 17-16.

The Mountaineers took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning, but could not hang on as Ocean State pushed across the tying run to send the game to extra innings. Vermont scored the go ahead and eventual game-winning run in the top of the twelfth, when catcher Danny Bermudez (Cumming, Ga. / Western Carolina) led off the frame with a base knock to left. First baseman Simon Rosenbaum (Los Altos Hills, Calif. / Pomona-Pitzer) followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Bermudez to second with one out. After Laren Eustace (Batavia, Ill. / Indiana) singled to left to set the stage at first and third with one out, pinch hitter Riley Jackson (Lexington, Ky. / Louisville) connected on an RBI single to put Vermont up by the final 3-2.

Closer Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif. / Eastern Michigan) came in to pitch a one-two-three twelfth to collect his ninth save of the season.

The Mountaineers trailed 1-0 from the first inning until the seventh when they knotted the game at one. Leftfielder Nick Ruppert (La Mesa, Calif. / Dartmouth) led off with a single and stole second. Two batters later, and with one out, first baseman Austin Taylor (Friendship, Tenn. / Tennessee Martin) walked. Rightfielder Eustace followed with an RBI single to score Ruppert from second and tie the game.

In the ninth, Vermont took a brief 2-1 advantage when pinch hitter Isaiah Pasteur (Westminster, Md. / Indiana) led off the inning with a walk. Ruppert then walked to setup first and second with no outs. Bermudez reached on a fielder's choice to keep runners at first and second with one out before Taylor smacked an RBI single to put the Mountaineers on top 2-1.

Ocean State tied the game at two in the bottom of the ninth.

The two starting pitchers each tossed seven innings of one-run ball. For Ocean State, Tony Dibrell (John's Creek, Ga. / Kennesaw State) allowed the one run on five hits and one walk. He struck out seven. Vermont native and starter Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt. / Norwich) gave up the one run on just three hits and no walks. He struck out three.

Mountaineers' reliever Colton Davis (Commerce, Ga. / Western Carolina) earned the win to move to 2-0 on the summer. The righthander dealt two and one-third innings out of the pen and gave up no runs on one hit and one walk. He struck out four.

Ocean State reliever Matt Murphy (Wakefield, R.I. / Assumption) took the loss to fall to 0-3 on the summer. Murphy pitched two and two-thirds innings, allowing one earned run on four hits and one walk. He struck out two.

The Mountaineers return to action on Friday night, when they play the Newport Gulls in Game 2 of their four-game road trip. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. at Cardines Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
