WAKEFIELD, R.I. - The Ocean State Waves fell to the Vermont Mountaineers 3-2 in twelve innings on Thursday night at Old Mountain Field.

Waves starter Tony Dibrell (Kennesaw State) pitched the first seven innings of the game, striking out seven batters. The game had a promising start for the Waves as NECBL All-Star Dylan Burdeaux (Southern Mississippi) blasted a solo home run over the left field fence to immediately put the Waves ahead in the bottom of the first inning 1-0.

Ocean State kept the lead until the top of the seventh, when Nick Ruppert (Dartmouth) scored on a ground ball single hit up the middle by Laren Eustace (Indiana) to tie up the score at one apiece.

George Capen (Holy Cross) came on his tenth appearance of the summer as he replaced Dibrell in the top of the eighth. Capen pitched one inning and struck out one batter without any hits before Richard Lovelady (Kennesaw State) replaced him in the top of the ninth to keep the Mountaineers off balance.

Vermont would not lay down however, as Danny Bermudez (Western Carolina) scored in the top of the ninth off a single by Austin Taylor (Tennessee-Martin) to give the Mountaineers a lead of 2-1. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Tim Lynch (Southern Mississippi) then scored on a single by AJ Ramirez (Southern California) to tie the score 2-2 and bring free baseball to the two squads.

Matt Murphy (Assumption) then replaced Lovelady in the top of the tenth, and held Vermont off until the top of the twelfth inning. The Mountaineers put together a couple hits and a bunt to score their third run of the game and take the 3-2 lead as Bermudez scored. Blaise Whitman (Rhode Island) replaced Murphy in the top of the twelfth to finish the inning. Whitman induced a fly out off the bat of Ridge Smith (Austin Peay) to end the twelfth.

The Waves came close to scoring in the bottom of the eleventh, when Ryan Blanton (Georgia State) and Burdeaux reached base to lead off the inning. However, Mountaineers pitcher Colton Davis (Western Carolina) struck out Lynch and Chuckie Robinson (Southern Mississippi) before getting Ramirez to ground out to second.

Mountaineers closer Sam Delaplane (Eastern Michigan) retired the side in order in the bottom of the twelfth, inducing a popout off the bat of Dom Veltri (Belmont) to secure the 3-2, twelve inning victory for the Mountaineers.

With the loss, the Waves fall to 17-16 on the summer, currently sitting five games out of first place in the NECBL Southern Division. The Waves sit two games behind the Mystic Schooners for second in the division, while they lead the New Bedford Bay Sox by just a game for the three seed.

The Waves return to action tomorrow night as they battle the Plymouth Pilgrims at Forges Field. Geoff Murphy (Boston College; 1-1, 2.38 ERA) gets the start for the Waves, while the Pilgrims counter with Tyler Johnson (South Carolina; 3-1, 3.50 ERA). Tune in online as Tim Scott, Bennett Karrol, and Hunter Julius bring you the call on the NECBL Broadcast Network. First pitch is set for 6:30 in Plymouth.
