*MOUNTAINEERS FALTER AGAINST SCHOONERS, 6-2*

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped a 6-2 decision to the Mystic Schooners on Tuesday night during New England Collegiate League (NECBL) action at Montpelier Recreation Field.

The loss snapped an eight-game home winning streak for the Mountaineers (10-15), who had also won three straight contests entering tonight.

The Schooners (16-11) jumped out an early lead that was never relinquished, scoring once in the second and third innings, a pair in the fourth, and one each in the fifth and sixth.

Leadoff man Richard Slenker (Wilton, Conn./Yale) reached on a single and then moved up a bag on a throwing error in the second. He came around to score on a bases loaded double play.

Mystic added another run thanks to an RBI single by Nick Mascelli (Clifton, N.J./Wagner) in the third.

Defense cost Vermont a pair of runs in the fourth. A RBI single by Ryan Ramirez (Freehold, N.J./Seton Hall) made it 3-0, before he came around to score after a wild pitch and a throwing error by the catcher.

A run in each of the next two innings put the Schooners up 6-0, before Vermont was able to break up the shutout in the home half of the sixth.

With two outs, Mountaineers left fielder Keegan Meyn (Oklahoma City, Okla./Arkansas Little Rock) ripped a double to left, which was followed up by a single by second baseman Jeremy Giles (Claremont, Calif./Stony Brook). After a passed ball advanced both runners, Ryan Fineman (West Lake Village, Calif./Indiana) knocked in the pair and cut the lead to 6-2.

That was all the scoring in the game as Vermont missed out on a few late opportunities to cut into the lead.

Mystic starter Kevin Magee (Pompton Lakes, N.J./St. Johns) improves to 2-1 after tossing five and two third innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, while fanning eight batters.

Sean Callahan (Colchester, Vt./UMass Dartmouth) suffered the loss. He went five full innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on 10 hits. He struckout six batters.

The Mountaineers will play three games in the next two days, all on the road. They begin in Keene, N.H. against the Swampbats at Alumni Field on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. You can listen locally on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI and watch online via the NECBL Broadcast Network.
