Mystic Schooners Win 6-2
MONTPELIER - The Mystic Schooners got a big 6-2 victory over the Vermont Mountaineers from the Northern Division Tuesday night at Recreation Field and completed the season sweep.
After no runs were scored in the first inning, the Schooners started things off offensively in the second inning. Rich Slenker led things off with a ground ball to short that was thrown past the first baseman to the fence allowing Slenker to take second. Aaron Hill followed that with a single to advance Slenker to third base. With runners on the corners and nobody out, Scotty Bradley put the ball in play to pick up the RBI and score the runner to give the Schooners their first run of the game.
Mystic would add another run in the very next inning. Toby Handley led the inning off with a double and Nick Mascelli drove him in with a double to give the Schooners a 2-0 lead at the end of three innings.
With one out in the fourth, Aaron Hill singled and advanced to second on a passed ball. Ryan Ramiz then hit a single to left field to bring in Hill from second to tack on another run. One more came in the fourth when Ramiz broke to third from second, the throw down sailed to the outfield allowing Ramiz to score to bring the lead to 4-0 after four innings.
The Schooners offense continued to bring in runs. Rich Slenker singled in Chase Lunceford from third who hit a one out triple to start things off in the fifth. And in the sixth, CJ Moore hit a sharp grounder through the infield to score Ramiz from third to bring the score to 6-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
The two runs for the Mountaineers both came in the sixth inning. With two outs, Keegan Meyn doubled and Jeremy Giles singled. With both of them in scoring position Ryan Fineman brought both runners across with a single to make the score 6-2 which would be the final.
To go along with the bats, the pitching for the Schooners was on point. Kevin Magee got the start and picked up the win. He went 5.2 inning, gave up two earned runs on seven hits. He also struck out a season high eight batters in the outing. Matt Ardente and Danny Marsh threw the final 3.1 innings allowing just two hits.
With the win the Schooners are now 8-2 against Northern Division opponents and 16-11 on the season. The Schooners are still one game out of first place in the Southern Division.
The Schooners next game is on Wednesday at the Shipyard. It will be the first home game of the season in a week. They will host the Danbury Westerners, first pitch is scheduled for 6:05.
