Bay Sox vs Blue Sox Recap
July 12, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
New Bedford Bay Sox News Release
The New Bedford Bay Sox limped into Tuesday night's home tilt with the Valley Blue Sox, and they felt the after effects of losing two of their top hitters in a 5-1 loss to the Valley Blue Sox.
The Bay Sox offense was shut down by a quintet of Blue Sox pitchers, who allowed just one run on five hits in the game. The only run of the game was driven in by Jakob Goldfarb (Oregon), who had the only multi-hit game for New Bedford, as they clearly missed the reigning NECBL Player of the Week, Hamilton College's Ryan Wolfsberg.
Two of the three Ryan's on the Bay Sox roster - Wolfsberg and Ryan Tufts - left Monday night's 7-5 victory at Newport with injuries. Wolfsberg is day-to-day after getting hit in the face with a fly ball while trying to make a leaping catch against the fence at Cardines Field in Newport, but the news on Tufts (Virginia Tech) is not as encouraging. Tufts was plunked by a fastball in the first inning in the head, and was taken to the hospital with a concussion. Tufts will be out for the season with the concussion.
Wolfsberg was replaced in left field last night and tonight by Chandler Debrosse (Central Connecticut State), and the infielder made an outstanding play in the first inning, sliding to catch a ball in foul ground. The Bay Sox needed that great play to limit the early damage done by the Blue Sox, as the road squad scored twice on consecutive RBI hits with two down in the inning. The first run came after a questionable call on a stolen base attempt by Valley leadoff hitter Kyle Mottice, who reached on a walk.
Speaking of terrific defensive plays, New Bedford third baseman Alex Mata (St. Leo) was absolutely robbed on a rocket to his counterpart at the hot corner, Braxton Morris. Morris made an acrobatic stop, diving to his right before quickly turning and starting a 5-4-3 double play to end the second inning.
The Bay Sox were stymied by Valley starter Endy Morales during the first three innings of the contest before striking for a run in the bottom of the fourth, with Goldfarb driving in Andrew Penner (Los Angeles Valley) with just the second New Bedford triple of the season. Goldfarb had the only two hits that Morales allowed in his first four innings, as the former reliever excelled in his first start of the season for the Blue Sox.
Valley responded in the top of the fifth inning with a single run off starter Brandon Schlimm (St. Bonaventure), as Hezekiah Washington drove in his second run of the game with his third single in the first five innings. Schlimm's outing on Tuesday evening was not as dynamic as his previous start last Wednesday at home, where he struck out 10 batters in a six inning victory, with the lanky righty lasting 5.1 innings and allowing three runs on eight hits, five strikeouts, and one walk. Schlimm was replaced in the sixth by Derrick Pickvet (North Georgia), who retired the last two batters of the sixth via pop-ups to the right side of the Bay Sox infield.
Pickvet was victimized by Randolph in the seventh inning, as the New Orleans outfielder obtained his fourth hit of the night with a two-run blast to give Valley a 5-1 lead. Randolph entered the game with 10 RBIs and a modest .256 batting average, but drove in four runs and scored twice for the Blue Sox, who snapped a five-game losing streak.
Daniel Southerland (Wheaton) pitched a scoreless eighth inning, and after allowing a leadoff single in the ninth, John Sostarich (Sacred Heart) was called upon and struck out the side, including becoming the only Bay Sox pitcher to retire Randolph.
The loss is just the second in seven games for New Bedford, who will have Wednesday off before hosting the Sanford Mainers on Thursday night. Game time is 6:30pm.
