Vermont Mountaineers News Release

The Vermont Mountaineers picked up their seventh loss on the young season, as they fell to the Valley Blue Sox, 7-3 on Friday in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) play.

Vermont starter TJ Santiago (Linden, N.J./Adelphi) went five and one third innings, allowing four runs on five hits. Trent Astel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Xavier) started for the Blue Sox, going five and one third innings, scattering five hits and giving up just two earned runs.

A big top of the fourth was the difference-maker for Valley, as they scored three runs on a critical error by Santiago. The pitcher fielded a softly hit ground ball, but threw it over the head of his first baseman, which allowed three runs to score.

The Blue Sox added two more in the eighth thanks to an RBI-double by Kipp Moore (Waddy, Ky./Murray St.). The catcher drove in Erik Ostberg (Florence, Mass./Hartford). Moore scored later in the inning thanks to an RBI-double by Jacen Neliesnik (Lehighton, Pa./Lehigh).

Neliesnik was the Sox's biggest offensive contributor, as he had two doubles, a single, and a run scored.

Valley capped their offensive day in the top of the ninth with a solo home run by shortstop Travis Jones (Humble, Texas/Texas Austin).

Vermont had eight hits in the game, but was mostly quit offensively. They scored a run in the third thanks to an RBI-triple by Joe Tietjen (Waxhaw, N.C./UNC Asheville). The Mountaineers also added two more in the sixth, thanks to an RBI-single by Mikael Mogues (New York, N.Y./Seton Hall), and a fielder's choice by Zeke Pinkham (Louisville, Ky./Louisville) that scored first baseman Ryan Fineman (Bloomington, Ind./Indiana).

Astel got the win for the Blue Sox in his first start of the year. Santiago picked up the loss for Vermont, moving him to 0-1.

The Mountaineers fall to 1-7. They have a day off, before they'll look to turn their season around on Sunday when they travel to Winnipesaukee to take on the Muskrats for the third time this season. The game can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI and online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
