
Mountaineers Dominate Danbury 10-1

MONTPELIER,Vt. - Aided by a six-run fifth inning, the Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Danbury Westerners, 10-1, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Recreation Field on Wednesday night.
With the win, the Mountaineers move to 5-3 on the summer, while Danbury falls to 0-9.
Leading 4-1, Vermont struck for a huge inning in the fifth. Returning for his first game of the season, senior centerfielder Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y. / Stony Brook) led off the frame with an infield single. Sophomore first baseman Austin Cangelosi (Orland Park, Ill. / Indiana) followed with an RBI triple to right-center field. Cangelosi came in to score on a wild pitch to make it 6-1 Mountaineers. Two batters later, pinch hitter Ridge Smith (Clarksville, Tenn. / Austin Peay) hit an infield single. Sophomore Isaiah Pasteur (Westminster, Md. / Indiana) then grounded into a fielder's choice to reach with two outs. Newcomer Pat Madigan (Freeport, N.Y. / Northeastern) singled before fellow newcomer Riley Jackson (Lexington, Ky. / Louisville) reached on an error by Danbury shortstop Taylor Love (Shreveport, La. / Louisiana Tech.) Pasteur scored on the play to make it 7-1. Newcomer Devin Hairston (Lexington, Ky. / Louisville) followed by connecting on a two-RBI double to right-center field, his second multi-run hit of the night, to make it 9-1. After pinch hitter Austin Clemons (Louisville, Ky. / Louisville) reached on an infield single, Parenty notched his second hit of the inning, an RBI single to score Hairston and put Vermont up 10-1.
Danbury scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning, but the Mountaineers answered with three in the bottom half. senior catcher Kevin Stypulkowski (Lake Worth, Fla. / Maine Orono) walked to lead off. Three batters later, Jackson walked to set up first and second with two away. Hairston followed by stepping into his hist at bat as a Mountaineer and cranking a three-run homerun to left field to give Vermont a 3-1 lead, one the team would not surrender.
Tim Knesnik (Milford, Pa. / Stony Brook) started for the Mountaineers and pitched four innings. He allowed one earned run on three hits and two walks. He struck out three.
Lefthander Taylor Durand (Oak Ridge, Tenn. / Western Carolina) dealt the next two innings in relief and allowed no runs, hits or walks. He struck out one and earned the win to move to 1-0 on the summer.
Sean Leland (Orland Park, Ill. / Louisville) and Colton Davis (Commerce, Ga. / Western Carolina) combined to pitch the final three scoreless innings.
Chris Morris (Matawan, N.J. / Seton Hall) started and took the loss to fall to 0-1. He lasted three and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs (all earned) on three hits and two walks. He struck out four.
The Mountaineers return to action on Thursday, June 18, when they travel to Massachusetts to take on the North Adams SteepleCats. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
