Mountaineers defeat North Adams

Montpelier, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the North Adams SteepleCats 8-2 in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Recreation Field on Saturday night. With the win, the Mountaineers move to 11-6 on the summer. Vermont now sits atop the Northern Division standings with a two-game lead over the second place Sanford Mainers.

The Mountaineers bats were rather dormant for the first five innings, as they pushed across just one run in the fourth. The Vermont bats woke up in the sixth, exploding for six runs in the inning. Pinch hitter Mike Krische (Canisius) singled to lead off the inning. After Chandler Brock (Alabama-Huntsville) walked, Trey Amburgey (St. Petersburg) reached on an error by SteepleCats first baseman Luke Maglich (South Florida). Krische came around to score on the play to knot the game at two. Mike Vigliarolo (St. Louis) followed with the hit of the game, a two RBI double to left center, scoring Brock and Amburgey to give the Mountaineers a 4-2 lead, one they would only add to. Three more hits in the inning courtesy of Nick Solak (Louisville), Colin Lyman (Louisville) and Adam Picard (UMass) led to three more Vermont runs to increase the Mountaineers lead to five at 7-2.

Vermont scored one more run in the eighth to make it 8-2.

Starting pitcher Evan Bell (Indiana) had another strong outing, dealing six innings. He gave up just two earned runs on six hits and two walks. Bell struck out four and improved to 2-0 on the summer.

Ty Wiest (Columbia) earned his second three-inning save of the season. He allowed no runs, no hits and just one walk. He struck out two.

Newly signed SteepleCats starter, Dylan Silva (Florida State) took the loss to move to 0-1, but pitched well through five innings. Silva's final line showed four runs (three earned) on three hits and two walks. He also struck out six. He didn't face any real trouble until the sixth, when he was replaced by reliever Jonathon Mulford (Adelphi).

The Mountaineers bounce back into action on Sunday night, when they host the Danbury Westerners for an NECBL inter-division showdown at Recreation Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
