
Mountaineers defeat North Adams SteepleCats

Montpelier, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the North Adams SteepleCats 5-4 in thrilling fashion in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Recreation Field on Saturday night. With the win, the Mountaineers have now won six straight entering Sunday's two-day All-Star break. Vermont sits at 21-10, two and a half games ahead of the second place Sanford Mainers in the Northern Division.
Cameron Sorgie (UAlbany) earned his first save of the season by recording the final four outs of the game and closing the door on the SteepleCats. Sorgie threw and inning and one-third, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out three and stranded the bases loaded in the ninth with the tying run just 90 feet away.
The SteepleCats left the bases loaded in the eighth and ninth innings.
The Mountaineers were once again aided by some brilliant starting pitching, this time from right-hander Jim McDade (Millersville). McDade dealt six innings, allowing no runs on one hit and one walk. He struck out six. With the win, McDade improves to 4-1 on the summer.
North Adams starter Dylan Sylva (Florida State) had a rocky first inning, giving up three runs, but settled down, allowing just one run over the next five innings. Sylva gave up four runs (all earned) on five hits and two walks. He struck out three, and with the loss, fell to 0-2 on the season.
Vermont scored early, pushing three runs across in the opening frame. Chandler Brock (Alabama-Huntsville) walked to lead off the inning. Nick Solak (Louisville) doubled to set up second and third with no outs. Mike Vigliarolo (St. Louis) ripped an RBI single to score Brock and make it 1-0 Mountaineers. Two batters later, Mike Krische (Canisius) was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Casey Rodrigue (Indiana) followed with a two RBI single top open up a 3-0 Vermont lead.
Vermont added an all-important insurance run in the eighth, with the score 4-3. Ian Sagdal (Washington State) led off the inning with a triple down the right field line. He came in to score when Jack Parenty (Stony Brook) hit a sacrifice fly to make it 5-3.
Following the 21st annual NECBL All-Star game at 5:05 p.m. on Sunday and a league-wide day off on Monday, the Mountaineers will return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Connecticut to take on the Mystic Schooners at 6:05 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com. Vermont will next play at home on Wednesday night, when the team hosts the Sanford Mainers for a 6:30 meeting at Recreation Field.
