Mountaineers Cruise Thanks to Brown, Big Seventh

MONTPELIER, Vt. - Backed by a six-run seventh inning and an outstanding outing by starting pitcher Casey Brown (Wenonah, N.J. / Central Connecticut State), the Vermont Mountaineers defeated the North Adams SteepleCats, 9-2, at Recreation Field on Saturday evening.

With the win, Vermont moves to 8-8 on the season. North Adams drops to 9-8.

With the score 2-0 in favor of the Mountaineers entering the seventh inning, Vermont put up a six spot to take a commanding 8-0 lead. Rightfielder Pat Madigan (Freeport, N.Y. / Northeastern) led off with a walk. Third baseman Devin Hairston (Lexington, Ky. / Louisville) followed with a single to set the scene a first and third with no outs. Centerfielder Laren Eustace (Batavia, Ill. / Indiana) reached on an error by North Adams shortstop Jim Haley (Upper Derby, Pa. / Penn State), allowing Madigan to score and make it 3-0. After Thomas Roulis (New Hyde Park, N.Y. / Dartmouth) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Hairston to third and Eustace to second, a wild pitch scored Hairston and moved Eustace to third. Joe Dudek (Wall Township, N.J. / Kentucky) walked to set up first and third with still just one out. Ridge Smith (Clarksville, Tenn. / Austin Peay) laid down a bunt single to plate Eustace and make it 5-0. Garrett Copeland (Bartlett, Tenn. / Austin Peay) then crushed a two RBI double to blow the game open at 7-0 before newcomer in leftfielder Nick Ruppert (La Mesa, Calif. / Dartmouth) hit an RBI single to cap off the inning and make it 8-0.

After the SteepleCats scored two runs in the eighth to make it 8-2, Roulis smacked an RBI double in the bottom of the inning to make it 9-2.

Eustace connected on his first homerun of the campaign in the third inning to make it 1-0 Vermont. His two RBI game now gives him five runs batted in over his last three games.

Brown was fantastic, dealing six and two-thirds innings for the Mountaineers. He gave up no runs on one hit and one walk. He struck out four and threw just 65 pitches in the game. He earned the win to move to 3-1 on the summer.

North Adams starter Dakota Edwards (Turlock, Calif. / Bridgeport) went four innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks. He took the loss, falling to 1-1 on the season.

The Mountaineers return to action on Sunday night for game three of the four-game home stand. Vermont will host Northern Division opponent Sanford for a 6:30 p.m. bout at Recreation Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
