Vermont Mountaineers News Release

KEENE, N.H.- The Vermont Mountaineers came from behind on Wednesday night to top the Keene Swamp Bats, 7-5 in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action.

The Swamp Bats jumped out to a lead in the third inning, when they scored three runs on two hits and capitalized on a pair of errors. Lucas Luopa (Keene, N.H./Eckerd) got them started when he reached on an error by the Mountaineers shortstop, and then scored on an error by the third baseman. Brandt Stallings (Buford, Ga./Georgia Tech) followed that up with a two-run double, scoring Ryan Costello (Wethersfield, Conn./Central Connecticut St.) and Joshua Shaw (Wayne, N.J./St. Johns).

Keene then got two more runs in the bottom of the fourth when Luopa knocked an RBI single, scoring Jack Morock (Elkhorn, Neb./Iowa Western CC). One batter later, Joshua Shaw ripped another RBI single, this time scoring two runs. From there, though, the Swamp Bats offense went quiet.

Vermont starter Joe Rocchietti (Green Brook, N.J./Manhattan) went four innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits. Rocchietti fanned three and walked one batter.

The Swamp Bats pitched ace Tommy Doyle (Vienna, VA/Virginia), who is slated to start the NECBL All-Star Game on Sunday in Newport, R.I. Doyle went four and two thirds innings, allowing one earned run on two hits.

The Keene bullpen struggled, allowing five runs on five hits over four and one third inning of work.

Troy Scocca (Syosset, N.Y./Fairfield) got the Vermont offense going in the top of the fourth when he knocked an RBI single, driving in Jeremy McCuin (Gilbert, Ariz./Arizona St.) from third. Vermont then got two more runs in the fifth thanks to a two-run homer off the bat of Joe Tietjen (Waxhaw, N.C./UNC Asheville).

Ryan Fineman (Westlake Village Calif./Indiana) extended the lead again in the sixth, when he launched a three-run homer.

The Mountaineers picked up an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Daniel Little (Nicholasville, Ky./Louisville) scored on a passed ball. That was all the Mountaineers would need from their bats, as relievers Sam Bordner (Baltimore, Ohio/Louisville) and Chandler Sedat (West Bloomfield, Mich./Indiana) shut down the Keene offense from the fifth inning on.

Bordner got the win for Vermont after pitching three innings, allowing no runs on two hits, while striking out three and walking one. Sedat pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth, picking up the save.

Mike Crimi (Bethel, Conn./Keene St.) suffered the loss for Keene. He threw just one inning, but allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits.

The Mountaineers improve to 11-15. They will be in action again on Thursday when they'll travel to Hartford, Vt. to take on the Upper Valley NightHawks in a doubleheader. The first game is set for 4:30 PM with another seven-inning contest scheduled for 6:30. The games can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
