SteepleCats Fall to Gulls

North Adams SteepleCats News Release

Tuesday night was just one of those games. One of those games where nothing seems to be going your way. That is how things went for the North Adams SteepleCats in a 14-1 loss to the Newport Gulls at Joe Wolfe Field. The loss dropped the 'Cats to 14-13 on the year and to a three way tie for second place in the Northern Division.

"We played pretty poorly and we just kind of took it instead of stepping up and doing something about it," said Head Coach Mike Armstrong.

Early on, the game looked like it could be a pitcher's duel. 'Cats starter Peter Lannoo pitched well through the first two innings, not allowing any runs and got the 'Cats out of a bases loaded jam in the second. It was with two outs in the third inning where things began to unravel. The Gulls added nine runs with eight of them being unearned before the 'Cats could make the third out.

Hunter Schryver, who had thrown five scoreless innings in each of his previous two starts for the Gulls, was able to continue his dominance against the 'Cats. Through seven innings pitched, he struck out seven and gave up one run off of two hits. He did not allow a single base runner in innings two through five. The Gulls also got a pair of scoreless innings out of position player Trey Harris in his pitching debut.

The 'Cats called on Robbie Buffis to come on in relief to begin the fourth. As the Gulls continued to swing the bats well, Buffis, who is normally a starter, was able to pitch deep into the game in his first bullpen appearance of the season.

"It definitely is an adjustment," said Coach Armstrong on having a starter suddenly get the bullpen call. "I certainly expect guys to come in and throw strikes and Robbie threw a lot of strikes."

Despite the loss, one major positive is that with Buffis' performance, the 'Cats were able to rest most of their relievers.

"I think we did that effectively for tomorrow and the rest of the week," said Coach Armstrong. "We have a double header coming up at the end of the week so a lot of innings to pitch. We are going to need our pen so I think we saved it really well tonight."
