Vermont Mountaineers News Release

MYSTIC, Conn. - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped a New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) battle to the Mystic Schooners, 5-1, at Fitch High School on Friday night.

With the loss, the Mountaineers fall to 2-3 on the season. The Schooners improve to a league best 5-1.

The game began following an 18-minute delay, due to only one umpire being at the field.

Miscues in the field and an inability to hit with runners on base led to Vermont's defeat. Mystic scored two runs in the second inning on two hits and two Mountaineers' errors, and never looked back. Junior Ben Ruta (West Windsor, N.J. / Wagner) led off the frame with a single. He advanced to second two batters later, when sophomore Jesse Berardi (Commack, N.Y. / St. John's) grounded out to short. Ruta scored on an RBI single by senior Derek Jenkins (Annandale, N.J. / Seton Hall). Jenkins moved to second due to an error and came around to score on the next play to give the Schooners a 2-0 lead, when senior John Brucker (Sparta, N.J. / Marist) reached on an error.

The Mountaineers came back with a run in the fifth to cut the deficit to 2-1. Sophomore Austin Clemons (Louisville, Ky. / Louisville) led off with a walk. Senior Simon Rosenbaum (Los Altos Hills, Calif. / Pomona-Pitzer) followed with a hit-and-run single to set the scene at first and third with no outs. Junior Mike Bozarth (St. Louis, Mo. / St. Louis) pinch ran for Rosenbaum. Bozarth stole second during senior Thomas Roulis' (New Hyde Park, N.Y. / Dartmouth) at bat. On the play, Mystic sophomore catcher Anthony Fava (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. / St. John's) made an errant throw in an attempt to nab Bozarth at second. The ball ended up in center field, allowing Clemons to score the lone Vermont run of the game from third.

The Schooners added two runs in the fifth, courtesy of a Dan Hoy (Sellersville, Pa. / Princeton) two-run homerun. Mystic also scored once in the sixth to extend its lead to the eventual 5-1 final.

The Schooners scored all five of their runs with two outs.

Vermont starter Tom Cosgrove (Staten Island, N.Y. / Manhattan) threw five innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits and one walk. He struck out five. Cosgrove took the loss to move to 0-1 on the summer.

Mystic reliever Mike O'Rielly (Wading River, N.Y. / Flagler) earned the win in two-thirds of an inning of work. He gave up no runs on two hits and two walks and improved to 1-0 on the season.

Schooners' starter Jake Meyers (Omaha, Neb. / Nebraska) lasted four and one-third innings, allowing one earned run on four hits and two walks. He struck out two.

For Vermont, Roulis extended his hitting streak to five games and is hitting .636 (14-for-22) on the young season. Sophomore shortstop Isaiah Pasteur (Westminster, Md. / Indiana) led the Mountaineers with a three-hit outing.

Vermont returns to action on Saturday evening when the team concludes its two-game road trip in a showdown with the Danbury Westerners. The opening pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
