MONTPLIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Sanford Mainers, 9-3, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Recreation Field on Sunday night.

With the win, the Mountaineers improve to 4-3 on the summer. Sanford falls to 3-4.

With the score tied at three in the seventh inning, the Mountaineers exploded for six runs to take a commanding 9-3 lead.

Sophomore centerfielder Derek Chapman (Issaquah, Wash. / Washington State) led off the inning with a single, his third hit of the night. Senior second baseman Thomas Roulis (New Hyde Park, N.Y. / Dartmouth) followed with a hit-and-run single to right, moving the speedy Chapman to third to set the scene at first and third with no outs. Two batters later, with the runners on second and third, sophomore first baseman Austin Cangelosi (Oak Park, Ill. / Indiana) ripped an RBI single to put the Mountaineers on top 4-3 and move Roulis to third. After Cangelosi stole second and sophomore Bradley Barnett (Rockland, Texas / Texas Christian) walked to load the bases, all three runners moved up a bag on a passed ball to give the Mountaineers a 5-3 edge. After senior catcher Kevin Stypulkowski (Lake Worth, Fla. / Maine Orono) walked to re-load the bases, sophomore pinch hitter Garrett Copeland (Bartlett, Tenn. / Austin Peay) knocked an RBI single to right-center to make it 6-3 and keep the bases loaded. Two batters later and with two outs, senior Simon Rosenbaum (Los Altos Hills, Calif. / Pomona-Pitzer) drew a bases loaded walk to pick up an RBI, scoring Barnett to make it 7-3. The final two runs of the inning came home when Chapman reached on an error by Sanford shortstop Brendan Skidmore (Franklin, Mass. / Binghamton). Stypulkowski and Copeland scored on the play to make it 9-3.

The Mainers struck early, going up 1-0 in the first. They scored one run in the first, fifth and sixth innings.

Vermont scored runs in the third, fourth and sixth before embarking on the six-run seventh. For the Mountaineers, sophomore Isaiah Pasteur (Westminster, Md. / Indiana) connected on an RBI double in the third, while junior Ridge Smith (Clarksville, Tenn. / Austin Peay) crushed a solo homerun to left in the fourth.

Junior Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y. / Le Moyne) started for the Mountaineers and went four and two-thirds innings. He allowed two runs on five hits and two walks.

Sophomore Teddy Rodliff (West Babylon, N.Y. / Stony Brook) earned the win by pitching very well in relief. The lefty dealt three innings, giving up one unearned run on two hits. He struck out four. Rodliff is now 1-0 on the summer.

Junior Hayden Heflin (Summersville, S.C. / South Carolina) took the loss for Sanford to fall to 0-1 on the season. Heflin pitched just one-third of an inning and allowed five runs (four earned) on three hits and two walks. He struck out one.
