Mountain Lions Announce 2011 Schedule
June 9, 2011 - United Football League (UFL 1)
Sacramento Mountain Lions News Release
Sacramento, CA - Thursday, June 9, 2011 - The Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League will open the 2011 season on SUNDAY, AUGUST 14, in the first Sunday game in the three-year history of the league.
The Mountain Lions will host the Omaha Nighthawks on opening weekend. In 2010, Omaha (22,786) and Sacramento (18,250) topped the UFL in average home attendance.
Sacramento will then play at home again six days later as the two-time defending champion Las Vegas Locos visit Hornet Stadium on SATURDAY, AUGUST 20.
"It is exciting for us because our first two games are at home," said Mountain Lions head coach DENNIS GREEN. "It hopefully gives us a chance to build some momentum. I think Omaha comes into the year as one of the favorites. I think they will start fast again this year. It will be very exciting."
Kickoff times and TV broadcast details for all games will be available at a later date.
"We simply can't wait to get back out onto the field to play football," said UFL Commissioner MICHAEL HUYGHUE. "Fans will see competitive and meaningful games on Sundays when (NFL) preseason is usually the only game available, and then we will continue through the traditional fall season with more entertaining football.
"We set high standards in our two previous seasons and I am confident we will treat our fans to more exciting top-quality football. We have added more recognizable and successful head coaches to our league and they in turn are signing a great blend of experienced and promising players who will produce fireworks on the field and create a buzz in our stadiums. The quality of play is expected to be even better this year with more recognizable and experienced NFL players making up the teams' rosters.
"More than 100 UFL players have gone on to sign with NFL teams during our first two years and with our season ending in mid-October this year we again anticipate a large number of our players joining NFL rosters."
