Hartford Colonials News Release
EAST HARTFORD, CT - June 9, 2011 - It will be just like old times for Hartford Colonials head coach JERRY GLANVILLE when his team kicks off the 2011 United Football League season Aug. 13 with a road game against the Virginia Destroyers and head coach MARTY SCHOTTENHEIMER at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.
The league could not have picked a better storyline to begin its third season. The game is sure to draw national attention as it marks the UFL coaching debuts for Glanville and Schottenheimer, whose teams faced each other a total of 10 times from 1985-91 when they were NFL head coaches. Eight of those games were fierce AFC Central clashes pitting Glanville's Houston Oilers against Schottenheimer's Cleveland Browns.
The last time they were on opposite sidelines was Sept. 1, 1991, when Glanville coached the Atlanta Falcons and Schottenheimer was coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. In all, Schottenheimer holds a 7-3 advantage over Glanville. However, Glanville's Oilers defeated Schottenheimer's Browns in the only playoff game with the two coaches on opposite sidelines.
"Marty and I have done this before," Glanville said. "The league was pretty smart. No one will know what Marty's going to do; no one will know what I am going to do. Whoever would open up with us would have had a big disadvantage. ...That first game, hang on to your hat. You have no idea what's going to happen."
The Colonials will also close the regular season Oct. 15 with a road game against the Omaha Nighthawks. A total of 20 regular-season games will be played over a 10-week period, beginning on the weekend of August 13-14. The UFL championship game is scheduled on the weekend of Oct. 21-23 between the top two teams in standings. The venue and starting time will be determined at a later date.
The Colonials play six of their eight games on Saturdays, one on Friday (Sept. 23 vs. Omaha) and one on Sunday (Sept. 4 at Las Vegas). Each of the five UFL teams has two bye weeks. The 2011 UFL schedule features 11 games on Saturdays, five games on Sundays and four games on Fridays. All games are subject to change, and kickoff times and TV broadcast details for all games will be available at a later date.
Following a bye in Week 2, the Colonials play their home opener Aug. 27 against the Sacramento Mountain Lions. A rivalry is sure to ensue between the Colonials and two-time defending league champions Las Vegas Locos after the teams play on consecutive weekends, Sept 4 and Sept. 10. Hartford and Las Vegas split the season series in 2010.
"We simply can't wait to get back out onto the field to play football," said UFL Commissioner MICHAEL HUYGHUE.
"Fans will see competitive and meaningful games on Sundays when preseason is usually the only game available, and then we will continue through the traditional fall season with more entertaining football.
"We set high standards in our two previous seasons and I am confident we will treat our fans to more exciting top-quality football.
We have added more recognizable and successful head coaches to our league and they in turn are signing a great blend of experienced and promising players who will produce fireworks on the field and create a buzz in our stadiums.
The quality of play is expected to be even better this year with more recognizable and experienced NFL players making up the teams' rosters.
"More than 100 UFL players have gone on to sign with NFL teams during our first two years and with our season ending in mid-October this year we again anticipate a large number of our players joining NFL rosters."
The Colonials had 17 players from the 2010 team - about one third of the 52-man roster - sign NFL contracts, including five to active rosters.
Tickets are expected to go on sale within the next one to two weeks.
