The International League announced today that Pawtucket first baseman Brandon Moss and Buffalo pitcher Jeremy Sowers have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher-of-the-Week for the period from May 26-June 1. Moss is the second Pawtucket player to win an IL weekly award this year, joining hurler Charlie Zink (April 14-20). Sowers is the first member of the Bisons to be so honored in 2008.
BRANDON MOSS, Pawtucket Red Sox IL BATTER OF THE WEEK
On the strength of a three-home run game and a .400 average, Pawtucket first baseman Brandon Moss is the International League Batter of the Week. Moss made history Saturday night in Durham, becoming the first PawSox hitter since Izzy Alcantara in 2001 to go deep three times in one game. Moss, who also homered Friday in the series opener, was tied for the League-lead for the week with four long balls. He was also near the top of the circuit with 12 hits (T-1st), 8 runs scored (T-1st), an .867 slugging percentage (3rd), 9 RBI (T-3rd), and a .400 batting average (9th). He is now in the midst of a 10-game hitting streak, six of which have been multi-hit efforts. Moss began a rehab assignment with the PawSox on May 22 while recovering from an emergency appendectomy, and on May 24 he was officially added to the roster.
24-year-old Brandon Moss is in his seventh professional season after being selected by Boston in the 8th round of the 2002 draft. He first reached the Triple-A level in 2007, hitting .282 with 16 HR and 78 RBI in 133 games for Pawtucket, earning a trip to the Triple-A All-Star Game along the way. In 21 games with Boston he has a .283 average with two homers and 4 RBI. Moss is a native of Monroe, GA.

JEREMY SOWERS, Buffalo Bisons IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK Buffalo southpaw Jeremy Sowers allowed just one run over 13.0 innings this week to win a pair of games and bring home IL Pitcher of the Week honors. Tuesday night in Toledo, Sowers scattered eight hits over 6.0 innings, striking out five with just one walk while keeping the mighty Mud Hens offense off of the scoreboard as the Bisons earned a 6-2 victory. It was more of the same yesterday in Buffalo against Columbus. Sowers went 7.0 innings, again striking out five while surrendering five hits and one walk. A Tommy Murphy double with two outs in the 7th drove in the only run scored against Sowers this week, but it was not enough for the Clippers who lost the game 2-1. Sowers is now 4th in the International League with a 2.08 ERA for the season.
25-year-old Jeremy Sowers is in his fourth professional season, each of which has included some time with Buffalo. After winning his first Triple-A start in 2005, Sowers went 9-1 with a 1.39 ERA for the Herd in 2006. Last year he was 4-5 with a 4.10 ERA in 15 Triple-A starts. Sowers also owns a 8-10 record with the Cleveland Indians in 27 starts dating back to 2006. Sowers is a native of St. Clairsville, OH.
