Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - Rehabbing Pittsburgh Pirates starter Charlie Morton struck out eight over seven solid innings, Gorkys Hernandez drove in two runs and the Indianapolis Indians defeated the Norfolk Tides 3-2 on Thursday night at Victory Field.
Morton (1-0) was tagged for 11 hits but navigated around most of the trouble to give up just one earned run (two total runs) to the visiting Tides (19-15). He tossed 68 of his 96 pitches for strikes with no walks as part of his fifth career win with the Indians (20-15).
Hernandez delivered his lone hit as the game-winner in the bottom of the fourth. He doubled down the right field line to score Elias Diaz and Mel Rojas Jr. and give the Tribe a 3-2 lead.
With his two-base hit, Hernandez has now reached base safely in 29 of 35 games.
Indians relievers Deolis Guerra and Blake Wood preserved the lead with three strikeouts over two perfect innings. Guerra struck out one in the eighth and Wood earned his league-leading ninth save with two strikeouts in the ninth.
