Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
LAST TIME OUT: The RailRiders outhit the Norfolk Tides (Baltimore Orioles), 12-4, but fell in a Wednesday afternoon rubber match at Harbor Park, 3-1. The RailRiders stranded 11 men on base and hit into three double plays as the Tides (19-14) won for the sixth time in seven games. SWB has lost three of four.
AN OOPS AND A BLAST: Tied 1-1 in the eighth, a walk and a homer changed the game. Reliever Jared Burton (0-1) issued a free pass to Henry Urrutia and Dariel Alvarez followed with a home run to left-center for the 3-1 final.
HEY, I KNOW YOU!: It made a winner out of former RailRider and New York Yankee Cesar Cabral (1-0). Cabral was a Yankee and a RailRider in both 2013 and 2014. He began 2015 with a brief stint at Double-A Bowie for Baltimore. Norfolk closer Oliver Drake whiffed two in the ninth for his seventh save in as many tries.
QUALITY SANS REWARD: SWB starter Matt Tracy gave up just one run over a season-long six innings. All three of the hits he allowed came in succession in the third with the last, an Urrutia single, plating former Yankee Jayson Nix.
MR. CLUTCH: Tracy departed a 1-1 draw thanks to Rob Refsnyder, who delivered a two-out, two-strike double in the seventh that scored Jonathan Galvez. It was the RailRiders' only hit in 10 chances with a man in scoring position.
YOU DOWN WITH OBP? YEAH YOU KNOW ME: Refsnyder ran his on-base streak to 15 games with a pair of doubles and a walk. His on-base run started in game two of the April 25 doubleheader versus Pawtucket. In that time, he has hit .390 while posting an OBP of .455 and eight of his 11 RBIs. It marks the second-longest active on-base streak in the league (Columbus, Tyler Holt, 18 games).Refsnyder has multiple hits in three of his last four to lift his batting average to .293, the best it has been since he owned a .333 mark after two hits against Syracuse on April 11 in the team's third game. He has crushed in 12 road games (.347/.407/.490/.897) compared to his 17 home games (.254/.306/.313/.619).
RAZOR RAMON: Ramon Flores went 2-for-5 as the leadoff man. He has reached base safely in 22 of his last 23 games including a 16-game spurt from April 15-May 5. There have only been four longer runs in the league thus far this season (Charlotte's Dan Black: 20 games from April 11-May 7; Toledo's Daniel Fields: 20 games from April 17-May 12; Norfolk's Chris Parmelee: 18 games from April 22-May 11; and Columbus' Tyler Holt: 18 games from April 18-Present).
BULL PULL: Durham claimed each of the two series between the teams in 2013. Last year, the RailRiders settled for a four-game split in Moosic after losing three of four at Durham. SWB has not won a series at Durham since a four-game sweep from June 5-8, 2012. The franchise has not claimed a home series from Durham since another sweep from May 2-4, 2008. In that series finale, Kei Igawa struck out eight Bulls in seven innings for one of his franchise-record 33 wins. One of SWB's offensive heroes was a man played for Durham in 2014, Wilson Betemit. In one of his eight career SWB games he doubled, walked twice and scored two runs. In February the former New York Yankee was a free agent when he was suspended for 50 games after a positive test for a banned amphetamine.
OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders fell to 1-2 in rubber matches this season...SWB has not won a series at Norfolk since it took two of three in a rain-shortened 2009 set...Slade Heathcott pinch hit for Eddy Rodriguez at the start of the ninth...He struck out looking against Drake...Rob Segedin went 3-for-4 with a line out to second base...SWB hitting coach Marcus Thames was ejected from the dugout by home plate umpire Jon Byrne in the fourth...Flores hit leadoff for the first time this season...He had hit leadoff more than anywhere else in each of the prior three seasons (2012-14).
