Central Valley Coyotes News Release
(Fresno, CA) â Kenyatte Morgan of the Central Valley Coyotes broke the franchise's single season and career all-purpose yards record with a 14-yard kickoff return in the second quarter against the Hawaiian Islanders on Saturday night.
Morgan entered the game needing 144-yards to surpass the mark of 2,212 set by Steve Wofford in 2002. He currently has 2,284 all-purpose yards with eight 200 or more all-purpose yards games.
During the return Jones avoided the first tackler and turned up the right sideline for a 14-yard gain. He finished the night with 215 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns.
Said Morgan "I really wasn't even thinking about the record. I was just trying to make a play that would put our offense in a good position to score. I didn't even realize I broke the record until someone after the game told me."
Interim Head Coach Fred Biletnikoff Jr. was very pleased after the game on Morgan breaking the record, despite the Coyotes falling to the Islanders 70-42.
"I'm very proud of Kenyatte, he is a highly talented athlete who makes plays," said Biletnikoff Jr. "Even though our record isn't where we want it to be right now, we still have to recognize what a great accomplishment this is for Kenyatte."
Now Morgan is on pace to break the arenafootball2 league all-purpose yards record which was set last season by former Quad City Steamwheeler, Ira Gooch. In 2003, Gooch tallied 3,472 all-purpose yards appearing in all sixteen games for the Steamwheelers. He recorded 1,465 receiving yards, 1,196 kickoff return yards, 111 missed field goal return yards and 13 rush yards for an average of 174.1 yards per game.
Morgan has already tallied 1,282 kickoff return yards, 918 receiving yards and 94 missed field goal return yards to give him an average of 228.4 yards per game. If Morgan continues his average per game he will break the league record by more then 200-yards. The Coyotes still have six games remaining.
He is also on pace to break the af2 record for most games in a season with 200 or more all-purpose yards. Morgan currently has 8 games with 200 yards or more. The current record of 10 is also held by Ira Gooch, but was set in 2002.
"It's an honor to set a franchise record," said Morgan. "I've never been an individual type of player, everything I do is for my team. I know I have a chance to break Ira's records, but if it came down to it I would trade in the records for nine more wins this season."
