Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - In a season of transition and change, a season high-tying three-game winning streak wasn't in the cards to end the 2009 Pelicans campaign at BB&T Coastal Field.
The Winston-Salem Dash handed the Birds a 7-2 loss to complete the year, a season-ending loss securing a split in the final series of 2009 in front of 3,610 fans at the corner of 21st Avenue North and Robert Grissom Parkway.
After trading runs in the first inning, the Pelicans' coming on newly-minted team Most Valuable Player Donell Linares's 15th homer of the season, it was nearly all Dash offensively the rest of the way. The Pelicans took a brief lead after Michael Fisher doubled to open the third and scored on Linares's single a batter later. That's all Dash starter Miguel Socolovich allowed on five hits over four innings of work.
Winston-Salem seized the lead for good against Pelicans reliever Jaye Chapman (1-2) with two runs in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Tyler Kuhn and an RBI single from Joe Persichina. John Curtis singled home Justin Greene in the top of the sixth, and the seventh put the game away for the Dash. With Greg Paiml and Salvador Sanchez aboard after a hit-by-pitch and a single, Brent Morel torched a three-run homer to left field off Pelicans reliever Benino Pruneda to gain a 7-2 advantage. Myrtle Beach's offense couldn't recover.
Right-handed reliever Charlis Burdie (4-1) picked up the win for Winston-Salem, not allowing a run on two hits over two innings in relief of Socolovich.
Linares, the Havana, Cuba native and Pelicans third baseman, was honored as the team's MVP in a special pregame ceremony, the culmination of a year in which he played in 130 games and led team regulars in average. Linares played more games than any Pelican in a year that saw the team undergo over 110 transactions. Former Pelican closer and current Mississippi Brave Cory Gearrin earned team Pitcher of the Year honors (1.84 ERA, 17 saves in 18 opportunities), and former Myrtle Beach infielder Robert Marcial picked up the team's community service award.
With the 2009 season over, the Pelicans move ahead to 2010 with another exciting promotional schedule already deep in the planning stages.
