Keys Shutout in Finale

September 7, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

On Labor Day in Wilmington in the season finale, Frederick struggled against the league's top pitching staff once again as Wilmington shut down Frederick's offensive attack limiting the Keys to six hits in Frederick's 3-0 defeat.

The season closes with a 33-37 second half for Frederick. The Keys went 64-75 overall in 2009.

Frederick got a strong start from Sean Gleason who worked into the seventh inning with the game tied, 0-0.

Wilmington got a leadoff double on a drive from Clint Robinson that one-hopped the wall in right field and the Blue Rocks did not look back. It started a run of four consecutive hits, three of which doubles in a three-run Wilmington seventh inning.

Frederick would leave two men stranded at third base in the contest. Of its six hits the lone extra base hit came off of the bat of Billy Rowell who doubled with two men retired in the seventh inning.

The Keys got two perfect innings of relief from Brandon Cooney.

Robbie Widlansky clinched the first Keys batting title since 1997 by finishing the season hitting .340.

The game last two hours and one minute, the shortest nine inning game of the season for Frederick. Coincidentally the longest game this year was a four hour four minute contest on opening night in Salem.
