Mississippi RiverKings News Release
MACON, Ga. -- Mike Moran tallied a hat trick, but the Macon Mayhem (29-8-5) scored four goals in the third period to take game two of the weekend series from the Mississippi RiverKings (24-19-2) on Saturday night, 6-5.
The RiverKings got on the board first in the opening frame. Brantley Sherwood lifted a shot that bounced off of goaltender Troy Passingham and slipped across the goal line to put the RiverKings ahead 1-0 just 6:03 into the contest.
The teams traded goals throughout the second period. Macon got on the board when Daniel Gentzler fed Colin MacDonald for a shot that beat goaltender Peter Di Salvo at the 3:49 mark of the middle frame to tie the game at one. The RiverKings countered with a goal from Devin Mantha from the high slot to regain their one-goal lead. Macon then tied the game at two less than a minute later when Daniel Echeverri's shot beat Di Salvo, but the RiverKings regained the lead when Mike Moran followed up on a Mantha rebound and lifted it to the back of the net to give the RiverKings a 3-2 lead going into the third.
The Mayhem jumped out to a lead early in the third period. Daniel Gentzler tied the game on a breakaway pass from Jake Trask at the 3:45 mark of the third. Twenty seconds later Chris Joseph gave the Macon their first lead of the night on a backhand. Less than a minute later, Nick Grasso beat Di Salvo to extend the Mayhem lead to 5-3.
With Brad Barone replacing Di Salvo, the Mayhem added to their lead. Denis Sicard slid a shot past Barone to put Macon up 6-3 nearing the halfway point of the third.
The RiverKings battled back late. Moran notched his second goal of the game on a deflection off a Sam Higgins shot to bring the RiverKings within two. Just over a minute later, Moran, shorthanded, wristed a shot on a breakaway past Passingham to bring the RiverKings within one with under 90 seconds to play, but it was not enough, as the RiverKings fall 6-5.
Peter Di Salvo (9-5-0) stopped 14 of 19 shots against in 44:59 of play. Brad Barone (14-12-2) took the loss in relief of Di Salvo, stopping 10 of 11 shots against. Troy Passingham (6-2-1) earned the win by stopping 27 of 32 shots against for the Mayhem.
The RiverKings scored once on three power play opportunities, while the Mayhem were held scoreless on five chances with the man advantage.
The RiverKings return to Landers Center on Saturday, March 11 to take on Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs for RiverKings Care Night at 7:30 p.m. For tickets and details, visit RiverKings.com or call 662-342-1755.
