CLEARWATER, Fla. (April 30, 2013) - The Fort Myers Miracle closed out the month of April by winning their 21st game as they defeated the Clearwater Threshers 5-2 on Tuesday at Bright House Field.
Angel Morales put the Miracle up early with an RBI double, and he added a solo home run in the seventh to put Fort Myers up by three.
Miracle starter D.J. Baxendale improved to 4-0 in five starts. The University of Arkansas product allowed just two runs and five hits in six innings. He struck out five.
The Miracle have now won seven games in a row, and their 21-4 record gives them an .840 winning percentage which is the best in all of affiliated baseball. Only Delfines de Ciudad del Carmen of the Mexican League has more wins (22) in all of affiliated baseball.
Fort Myers scored the first run of the game for the 20th time this season. In the second, Matt Koch hit a one-out single off of Threshers starter Nick Hernandez and Andy Leer followed with another single. Morales stepped up and drove a pitch to deep left field, allowing Koch and Leer to score standing up.
Aaron Altherr lined a pitch off of Baxendale into the seats in the bottom of the second to make it 2-1, but Baxendale would settle down to retire 15 of the next 18 batters.
The Miracle added to their one-run lead in the sixth when Kennys Vargas ripped a pitch up the middle to plate Eddie Rosario.
Morales made it 4-1 in the seventh with a long home run to left against Luis Paulino.
Back-to-back doubles by Cameron Perkins and Logan Moore chased Baxendale from the game in the seventh, but Chad Rodgers quelled the rally by retiring all three batters he faced.
Rodgers pitched around a leadoff single in the eighth and Corey Williams pitched a perfect ninth to earn his sixth save.
Hernandez (2-1) took the loss. He gave up seven hits and three runs in seven innings.
Rosario, Morales and Leer all had multi-hit games for the Miracle.
