Mooseheads Double Eagles in Halifax

October 24, 2021 - Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) - Cape Breton Eagles News Release

HALIFAXn - The Halifax Mooseheads doubled up the Cape Breton Eagles 6-3 in a game that saw a bit of everything at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax on Sunday afternoon.

Halifax's power play was the story of the opening period. Markus Vidicek opened the scoring from the blocker side, putting it just under the bar. Before periods end, Elliot Desnoyers scored from the opposite side for another power play marker.

The game reached the halfway mark of regulation with a 2-0 score, before the Eagles converted on a power play of their own- Ivan Ivan cashed in on a rebound at the side of the goal. But the response from Halifax was swift- just 20 seconds later, Jordan Dumais cut out from behind the net to put the puck through the legs of Nicolas Ruccia. Then, with just 28 seconds left in the period, Desnoyers converted a cross-crease pass from Dumais to make it 4-1.

Ordinarily a goal that late in the period would be the talking point of the period but what happened next was even stranger. Halifax goaltender Mathis Rousseau headed to the bench, understanding that a penalty was coming up to the Eagles. However, the play continued as the penalty was called on the Mooseheads- although it appeared play continued even after the Mooseheads touched the puck. Émile Hegarty-Aubin wired the puck into the open goal. After some discussion it was deemed a good goal and the Eagles cut the lead to 4-2 before the break.

Ivan Ivan would score a more conventional goal, against on the power play, to start the scoring in the third period at the 3:42 mark. But the Halifax power play would strike again, Desnoyers completing the hat trick, and restoring the two goal margin for the home side.

With over two minutes remaining, Eagles coach Jake Grimes elected to lift Ruccia for an extra attacker. The visitors weren't able to get any closer as Zachary L'Heureux found the empty net to push the score to 6-3.

Rousseau stopped 25 of 27, in addition to the unusual empty netter, in picking up the win. Ruccia stopped 36 of 41 in addition to the empty netter in the loss.

The Eagles are next in action this coming Friday as they visit the Moncton Wildcats. Puck drop on Friday is at 7 PM.
