Manitoba Moose News Release

It was a goaltending battle on Thursday night, as both Daren Machesney and John Curry were flawless through 60 minutes of play to force overtime. A mere 39 seconds into the fourth period, Penguins winger Ryan Bayda notched the only goal of the night to confirm a 1-0 victory over the home town Moose at MTS Centre.

Right off the face-off and three seconds into the game, the Moose earned their first powerplay when Wade Brookbank was charged for cross-checking. Manitoba was able to register two shots on the man-advantage but couldn't break goaltender John Curry.

Tempers flared in the early minutes of the first period, as tough guy Matt McCue and Aaron Boogaard dropped their gloves near centre ice. After a lengthy battle, that didn't determine a clear winner, both parties were sentenced to five-minute fighting majors.

Matt McCue drew a slashing penalty at 13:10, giving the Baby Pens their first powerplay. But like the Moose, the visitors went goalless during the two minute-advantage and play resumed to even-strength.

After 40 minutes of play, the Moose were leading in shots 14-10, but neither team was able to notch their opening goal.

7:18 into the third period, Tommy Maxwell was involved in his second brawl of the night, this time with Aaron Boogard. After both players were torn apart by the linesman, they were sent to the sin bin to serve five-minute majors for fighting.

The third period saw back-and forth play from both clubs and for the second time this season, the Moose and their opponent were held scoreless through 60 minutes of play to force overtime.

Overtime

A mere 39 seconds into the fourth period, Ryan Bayda stormed the net and fired the puck past Daren Machesney to confirm the win, 1-0.
