Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose Hockey Club announced today February 20th, 2004 is being billed as ÂgThe Golden Years NightÂh. That night, the Moose will faceÂ]off against the San Antonio Rampage at the Winnipeg Arena. The organization will commemorate the years between 1972 and 1979 when the Winnipeg Arena was home to the World Hockey Association (WHA).
During the 1970Âfs, the Arena was home to the Winnipeg Jets, one of the original members of the WHA. They played their first WHA game at the Winnipeg Arena on October 15, 1972 and lost to the Alberta Oilers, 5Â]2. In the ensuing years, hockey legends such as ÂgThe Golden JetÂh Bobby Hull, Joe Daley, Ted Green, Ulf Nilsson, Anders Hedberg, Kent Nilsson, LarsÂ]Erik Sjoberg, and many others helped the Jets capture three Avco Cup Championships (1976, 1978, 1979). On January 5, 1978, the Jets beat Vladislav Tretiak and the Soviet National Team 5-3 at the Arena. The final game in the history of the WHA was also played at Winnipeg Arena on May 20, 1979 when the Jets defeated the Edmonton Oilers 7-3 to win the final Avco Cup.
The Moose are honouring those days when the Winnipeg Arena was home to WHA by turning back the clock one more time:
