Moose Edge Heat 3-2

WINNIPEG MB - The Manitoba Moose scored three goals in the first twelve minutes of the game, and then had to hang on to edge the Abbotsford Heat 3-2 in AHL preseason action on Friday night.

The line of Shawn Weller, Matt Pope and Jordan Schroeder would lead the moose on this night, as each member of the line tallied one goal and one assist. All scoring for the Moose occurred in the opening twenty minutes.

Weller would open the scoring at 7:51 of the first period. After a Travis Ramsey point shot was stopped by Heat starting goalie Matt Keetley, Weller would pounce on the juicy rebound to give the Moose the lead. Two minutes later, Weller would get in on the action again. On a Moose power play, Weller would drive wide left in the Heat zone and throw a goal mouth feed to Pope for the jam in at the top of the crease. At 9:53 of the first period, the Moose had doubled their lead. Just under two minutes later, the Heat was once again shorthanded, and the Moose made them pay. Jordan Schroeder took advantage of the Heat being down two men, and was able to walk in and beat Keetley high to the glove with a wicked wrist shot. Three goals in under four minutes of play and the Moose would go to the locker room with a 3-0 lead.

However, the Heat never backed away, and with the exception of those four minutes, controlled the pace of the game. In the second period, JD Watt would get the Heat on the board. After Carter Bancks made a great play to draw to Moose defenders to him, he slipped in a pass to Watt. Watt was able to catch Moose goalie Tyler Weiman by sliding a shot cross-grain inside the left post as he was skating to his right. Watt's first of the preseason cut the lead to 3-1 at 7:12 of the second.

Late in the second, on a Heat power play, Abbotsford would cut the lead to just one. Giffen Nyren would take a Brad Snetsinger pass at the point and hammer a shot past a screened Weiman at 18:27. The Heat would outshoot the Moose 9-6 in the second and go to the break down just one, 3-2.

For the Heat though, it would be the last time they beat Weiman, as the Moose keeper kept his team in front by making all 14 saves in the third period to preserve the win. In fact, the Heat only allowed two shots in the third and did not allow a single shot on Matt Keetley until the 13 minute mark of the final stanza.

The Heat drop their first preseason game 3-2, but they will get a chance to get on the winning track Saturday night with a rematch against the Moose in Portage la Prairie, MB.
