Devils win over Phantoms

Troy, NY - The Adirondack Phantoms received goals from Peter MacDougall and Garrett Klotz but it wasn't enough as an empty-net goal with 14 seconds remaining sealed a 4-2 victory for the Albany Devils at the Houston Fieldhouse on the campus of RPI in Troy Saturday night.
David McIntyre again starred for the Devils this time scoring two of the team's goals.
The game again featured several skirmishes and penalties. MacDougall and Zac Rinaldo both took game misconducts for the Phantoms for various altercations. If the two preseason games between the Phantoms and Devils are any indication the 12 regular season encounters between the two area rivals could provide for even more of the rough stuff.
Albany took advantage of the Adirondack penalties by going 2-for-9 on the power play to provide the difference. The Phantoms went 0-for-5.
Trailing 2-0 late in the second period the Phantoms would score back to bach goals about two and a half minutes apart to even the score. Peter MacDougall deflected Chad Denny's drive from the point to get the Phantoms on the board at 12:22. Then Garrett Klotz walked in along the goal-line from the left-win and jammed a backhander through Devils goalie Jeff Frazee at 14:51 to tie the game.
The Phantoms dominated play at the beginning but weren't able to capitalize against the Capital Region foes. Adirondack had the first 9 shots on goal of the game and outshot the Devils 14-5 in the first period even though Albany had a 5-on-3 power play in the opening frame.
The Phantoms conclude the preseason Sunday night at the Syracuse Crunch at 7:00.
Albany outshot Adirondack 29-26. Nic Riopel took the loss for the Phantoms allowing 3 goals and making 25 saves on 28 shots. Jeff Frazee was the winner for the second night in a row for the Devils with 24 saves on 26 shots.
The Phantoms open the regular season on the road next Friday, October 8th at the Binghamton Senators and then will be the visitors for Albany's home opener on Saturday, October 9th.
Adirondack's first home games of the 2010-11 regular season, presented by Bud Light, will be Friday, October 15th and Saturday, October 16th. The Opening Night game is presented by Potvin & Potvin Family Dentistry and Nemer Ford and the first 5000 fans will receive Phantoms magnet schedules courtesy of Potvin & Potvin Family Dentistry.
