Monuments Drop Record-Setting Opener

Waldorf, MD - Southern Maryland came into the first game of a series with the York Revolution looking to continue their strong play. While the Monuments had an outstanding offensive performance, the pitching staff struggled and Southern Maryland fell 18-12 to York.

Brandon Cumpton (L, 3-8) was unable to find success against the Revs' bats. York's offense started the scoring in the top of the first inning, scoring three runs. They kept up the pressure plating one run in the second inning and three more in the third. The Monuments scored their first run of the game in the second inning. With Tony Thomas leading off of first base, Edwin Garcia singled to left field. The Revs' left fielder, Justin Trapp, overthrew third base, allowing Thomas to score. The Monuments tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth inning with a Thomas solo home run. The Revs led 7-2 after the fourth inning.

The York bats continued to shine in the fifth and sixth innings. They blew the game open with five runs in the fifth, while adding five more in the sixth. Meanwhile, the Monuments mustered only one additional run off of the York starter, Ian Thomas (W, 3-0). At the end of the sixth inning, York led 17-3.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Monuments trailed 18-3 and their bats came alive. After Josh McAdams and Kent Blackstone singled, Rubi Silva ripped a double down the right field line, cutting the deficit to 18-5. With two outs, Dean Green recorded his first hit in a Southern Maryland jersey, scoring Silva in the process. The Monuments added three more runs in the inning, cutting York's lead to 18-9.

Josh McAdams and John Hayes pitched very well out of the bullpen for Southern Maryland. In the last three and two-thirds innings, York scored only a single run. In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Monuments' offense came alive again. With runners on first and second, Jon Griffin chopped a ground ball past the York third baseman Henry Castillo, scoring one run. Two batters later, Blackstone roped a double into left-center field, plating two runs, and cutting the deficit to 18-12.

The Monuments ultimately lost 18-12, in a game in which season records and all-time records were broken. Southern Maryland set a season high for hits in a game with 15, and they also set a season high for runs in a game with 12. The teams combined for a Revs' franchise record, with 30 runs scored in a single contest.

The Blue Crabs return to Regency Furniture Stadium tomorrow, June 3, for a 6:35 start time, with a fireworks extravaganza to follow.
