Montreal Signs Marc-Andre Bergeron

MONTREAL, QC - Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced today that the club has signed defenceman Marc-Andre Bergeron to a one-year contract (2009-2010). As per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Bergeron will join the Hamilton Bulldogs on a conditioning stint.

Bergeron, 28, played in 72 regular season games with the Minnesota Wild in 2008-2009 recording 32 points (14 goals, 18 assists) and serving 30 penalty minutes. Seven of his goals were on the power play and he also tallied three game-winning goals.

The 5-foot-9, 198-pound defenceman has played a total of 339 NHL games with Edmonton, New York Islanders, Anaheim and Minnesota registering 160 points (62 goals, 98 assists) along with 161 penalty minutes. In 2005-2006, Bergeron reached the Stanley Cup Final with the Edmonton Oilers losing to the Carolina Hurricanes. In 24 NHL career playoff games he posted six points (three goals, three assists).

The native of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec played two seasons with the Hamilton Bulldogs from 2001-2003 where he recorded a total of 54 points (10 goals, 44 assists) in 116 games. He earned seven assists and 25 penalty minutes in 20 games as a member of the 'Dogs team that reached the Calder Cup finals in 2003. He was also voted to the 2002-2003 AHL Second All-Star Team.

The Bulldogs host the Rockford IceHogs in their 2009-2010 home opener on Friday, October 9th at 7:30 p.m. at Copps Coliseum.
