New Orleans VooDoo News Release

New Orleans VooDoo DS Monty MontgomeryÂ’s standout defensive performance in the teamÂ’s 64-46 victory over the Columbus Destroyers on Sunday was enough to earn him the AFLÂ’s ADT Defensive Player of the Week honors for week 11 of the regular season.

Montgomery recorded a season-high and team-high 12.5 tackles, a 14-yard interception return, a 42-yard fumble return for a touchdown, a tackle for a two-yard loss and three passes defensed.

MontgomeryÂ’s interception came in the third quarter on ColumbusÂ’s first offensive play following a defensive stop by the Destroyers, when he returned Ryan VenaÂ’s pass to the Columbus 14-yard line, setting up a subsequent VooDoo touchdown pass from John Fitzgerald to Aaron Hamilton which gave New Orleans a 44-27 lead. On the final play of the game, Montgomery recovered a fumble by Columbus OS Sedrick Robinson at the VooDoo 13 yard line, which he returned 42 yards for a touchdown.

“Monty has quickly become one of the best in the league at his position,” said VooDoo Coach Mike Neu. “Monty has been playing like this all year for us, not just on Sunday. The interception that he had provided a big momentum change for our team. He has been very consistent all year and you can’t say enough good things about him.”

It was the third time this season that a VooDoo player was singled out for a league award. FB/LB Dan Curran captured U.S. Army Ironman of the Month honors for February and WR/LB Lamont Moore was named the leagueÂ’s ADT Defensive Player of the Week for week 5.

The VooDoo return to action this Sunday when they travel to Austin to face the Austin Wranglers, one of the AFLÂ’s three 2004 expansion teams, including the VooDoo. The game will be broadcast live on NBC at 2 p.m. and can also be heard on WSMB 1350 AM.
