April 20, 2004 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release
CHICAGO - Cape Fear offensive specialist MATT BURSTEIN, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton wide receiver/linebacker LEROY MCFADDEN and Louisville defensive specialist JUSTIN THOMAS have been named the Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player, U.S. Army Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for Week 3 of the 2004 season.
BABY RUTH REAL DEAL OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Burstein (5-8, 184, Arkansas), who is in his fourth season, did all he could to help the Wildcats against the Columbus Wardogs Saturday night. In a 62-52 loss, Burstein caught 13 passes for 178 yards and five touchdowns. His 178 receiving yards is a league high for 2004, while his 13 receptions is the second most of any receiver this season. In addition to his receiving numbers, Burstein returned seven kickoffs for 195 yards (league high for 2004) including a 57-yard touchdown runback with 45 seconds left in the game. Burstein's 373 all-purpose yards is the fourth highest total in af2 history. This is the first weekly award of Burstein's af2 career.
U.S. ARMY IRONMAN OF THE WEEK McFadden (6-4, 245, Michigan State), in his third season, propelled the Pioneers to a 75-39 win over Green Bay Blizzard Friday night. On offense, McFadden caught four passes for 38 yards and two touchdowns and he rushed two times for three yards and another score. Defensively, the former Spartan recorded one solo tackle and he recovered a fumble for an eight-yard touchdown. The fumble recovery for a touchdown came on the heels of his second receiving score, creating a 14-point swing in the Pioneers favor late in the fourth quarter as they pulled away from the Blizzard. McFadden, who was named to the 2003 American Conference All-af2 First Team, is the first player to win a weekly accolade in Pioneers' history.
ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Thomas (6-0, 195, Louisville), playing in his third season, spearheaded a strong defensive effort as the Fire downed the defending American Conference Champion Macon Knights 78-42 Friday night. Fresh off a 10 solo tackles performance in Week 2; Thomas registered a game-high seven stops (6UA-2AT) in Week 3 to bring his yearly total to 17.0, which is second best in af2. He also grabbed a fumble recovery in the second quarter and he picked-off two passes, including one in the fourth quarter. Credited with four passes defended in the game, Thomas leads the league with 13 for the season. This is the first weekly honor of Thomas' af2 career and he is the first Louisville Fire player to be honored since Norman Mason won Ironman of the Week in Week 2 of the 2003 season.
