Earlier this week, Monterey Bay F.C. became the sixth team in the USL Championship era to take victory in its first meeting with a top-flight opponent with an impressive 1-0 shutout win over the San Jose Earthquakes at Cardinale Stadium on April 25 to advance to the Round of 32. Prior to that in the second round - the Crisp and Kelp's opening match of the tournament - Monterey Bay delivered a 3-1 win on the road in extra time against Central Valley Fuego FC on April 5. Now, winners from the Round of 32 will advance to the Round of 16 that is slated to take place two weeks later on May 23-24.
Similar to England's famous FA Cup, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is U.S. Soccer's National Club Championship. Now in its 108th edition, it is a single-elimination tournament that has crowned a champion every year since 1914. The history-filled tournament is open to all professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. In 1999, the oldest ongoing national soccer competition in the United States was renamed to honor American soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
The winner of the 2023 U.S. Open Cup will receive $300,000 in prize money and an automatic berth in the 2024 CONCACAF Champions League tournament, akin to Europe's well-known annual Champions League and Europa League tournaments.
