Monterey Bay F.C. Makes the Trip to Phoenix for Matchup with Rising FC
April 14, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Monterey Bay FC News Release
PHOENIX, Arizona - Monterey Bay F.C. (2-2-1, 7 points) heads to Phoenix, Arizona for a 7:30 p.m. PT kickoff on Saturday against Phoenix Rising FC (1-1-2, 5 points) at Phoenix Rising Stadium in Week 6 of the 2023 USL Championship regular season. Live streaming of the match will be available on ESPN+.
The Crisp and Kelp and Phoenix Rising FC last met for a midweek match near the end of the 2022 campaign on September 21. The Union took the lead early in the match with a goal from Christian Volesky in the 9th minute, but Phoenix would quickly equalize six minutes later with a penalty kick. Five minutes after that, Grant Robinson scored his first professional goal to retake the lead for the Union. Rising FC then tied it up at two with a second PK in the 40th minute before Volesky bagged his second to recapture the lead a third time for Monterey Bay into the halftime break. Phoenix then leveled it for the final time in the 75th minute, leading to MBFC earning a penalty in the first minute of stoppage time for a chance to win the match, but the shot by Conneh missed over the crossbar and the sides shared the points on the night.
With a 4-2 win over Monterey Bay F.C. in the Club's first-ever league match, Phoenix owns the all-time record 1-0-1, including a 1-0-0 mark at Phoenix Rising Stadium. This season, Monterey Bay F.C. looks to build on its promising run last season with a successful campaign in 2023 that hinges in part on making the playoffs for the first time in Club history. It's early, but MBFC currently sits in 5th in the Western Conference - two points and four spots ahead of Phoenix - and will aim to move up in the standings with its first road win since July 30, 2022 against Loudoun United FC. On top of that, a road win in Phoenix would go a long way in the Club's current mission of unfinished business.
