Now in its 108th edition, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup has crowned a champion every year since 1914, apart from 2020 and 2021. The tournament is conducted on a single-game-knockout basis and open to all professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer.
Birmingham knocked off USL League One club Chattanooga Red Wolves in the second round of the Cup, 4-1, on April 5th in Chattanooga, thanks to goals from forward Juan Agudelo (two), forward Diba Nwegbo, and defender Collin Smith.
Legion FC's third round opponent, Chattanooga FC, competes in the National Independent Soccer Association (NISA), and knocked off the Des Moines Menace in the second round of the USOC last week, also by a 4-1 scoreline. If the Black & Gold advances to the fourth round, teams will be redrawn, and an MLS club could come to play in Birmingham.
In the meantime, Legion FC's on the road for a USL Championship clash tomorrow night, Saturday, April 15, at 5:00pm CT versus Loudoun United. Tune in to watch the match on My68 or ESPN+.
