Cleveland Monsters News Release
Calvin Pickard stopped 14 shots in the third period and Kenny Ryan scored a shorthanded goal to lift the Lake Erie Monsters (23-19-4-3) to a 3-2 win over the Midwest Division leading Milwaukee Admirals (29-15-3-4) Tuesday night at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Joey Hishon and Michael Schumacher also scored for the Monsters, who split their two-game road set in Milwaukee and rebounded from Sunday's loss to the Admirals. The Monsters host Rockford Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Quicken Loans Arena.
Milwaukee struck first when Kevin Fiala sprung Colton Sissons on a breakaway at 12:04 of the first period, with Sissons ultimately tucking a wrist shot short-side on Monsters goalie Calvin Pickard to give the Admrials a 1-0 lead. The Monsters tied the game on a power play 2:34 later when Ben Street sent a picture-perfect pass from the left wing to Joey Hishon who was streaking toward the net. Hishon finished with a highlight-reel deke, tying the game at 1-1 with his 12th goal of the season. Cody Corbett also assisted on Hishon's goal.
Hishon factored into the lone goal in the second period, which gave the Monsters a 2-1 lead. With Michael Schumacher open behind the Milwaukee defense in front of the net in the offensive zone, Hishon snapped a pass onto the tape of Schumacher, who beat Admirals goalie Marek Mazanec with a low shot at the 13:46 mark of the second period. Bruno Gervais also assisted on the goal, which was the sixth goal of the season for Schumacher.
Kenny Ryan streaked up the right side, through the circle, and netted a shorthanded goal for his eighth tally of the season at 5:15 of the third period, stretching the Monsters lead to 3-1. Ryan beat Mazanec under the left arm with a snap shot. Ryan's shorthanded goal was the eventual game-winner for the Monsters, as a Mark Van Guilder goal for Milwaukee pulled the Admirals to within a goal with 2:05 remaining, but the Admirals were unable to tie the game.
Pickard stopped 34 of 36 shots, improving to 13-8-4 on the campaign. The victory was Pickard's 50th in a Monsters uniform. Mazanec stopped 15 of 18 for the Admirals, and his individual record is now 15-10-4.
The Monsters host Rockford Friday at 7:30 p.m., with Friday's game airing live on ESPN 850 WKNR.
